Immortal cars are good for reputation but bad for business. Overall, today’s cars are way better than some of the yesteryear cars. I don’t have to carry points, plugs or WD40 anymore for starters. Trouble with today’s cars, they’re too reliant on electronics which do fail and in some instances require dealer only repairs so making owners a captive audience. The clapping down on emmisions is in my view making cars more likely to have issues too ie EGR, DPF etc etc... Would I go back to old skool cars? No, I’m happier with modern ones.

My cars thirty two years old and nor do i feel the need to carry points plugs or WD40

Why would you? Ive never known a set of points to fail In my life , Yes they require routine maintenance in the form of adjustment and replacement but given that maintenance is carried out periodically they are very reliable

As for plugs the plugs in my volvo are volvo parts and i’ve never ever had one fail , Again maintenance required periodically as with any car

Modern cars have many nice features but for me nothing can take the place of that tank like quality of the a real volvo, And i would say that given the correct care are just as reliable as their modern counterparts

However its all personal choice what you feel comfortable driving

So.. to answer the question..

For me the time to sell is when

Suspension is getting softy
Gearbox that wasn't taken care of by previous owner is bumpy
Car (and the gearbox) has over 250000 on clock and insurance value/eventual payout is close to £0
And I need something with a tad more load/weight capacity.

Mind, if any of above points was missing, ANY, it would be a keeper.

Oh, well.. Hopefully by next winter, as at the moment I'm skint after splashing out on that wedding..

Ford... Vauxhall.... 40+ years old and a choke to hang the Feu Orange Air Freshner off too

Ok, that was a million years ago. To answer the OP’s question, the only reason I outed my V50 was there was rust in the chassis. Although it needed to have a suspension rebuild, rear crank oil seal on the engine it was still a good motor. I outed it before the rust became a noticeable subject for the MOT tester. Suspension units etc can be changed for a reasonable price but it all depends on what you consider passed its sell by date. I’m a believer in the Devil you know and if the rust hadn’t have broken out I’d have happily kept my V50 indefinitely.

It is definitley more economical to maintain the old than investing in a new, especially when it is a Volvo with an average life span of 18 years.
where did that figure come from? It used to be 23 years ! Its 7 years now ...

and yes , always cheaper to keep your old one going than get a new one . OR get a 300 series , they never need any parts or breakdown !

using the car on public road without its dpf is now a criminal offence as well as an mot fail. What does its replacement cost ? It would be very naughty to flog the car to some unsuspecting punter without telling them about the four-figure?? bill coming their way. Ahem. Why not keep it until something else expensive needs doing then trade it in. How much mot left ? Now is a good time to do a deal on a newer car as hardly anyone is buying.

I just keep my 1996 960 maintained and serviced and it just runs - beautifully. The cost of buying an equivalent newer car never seems to have been worth it, with switching not being justified by the 'added value' of the more modern cars, which don't match the solidity and build quality of the old timer. So, it's 22 years and counting . . . . . .
