Been camping for years since a kid. Best advice for family camping (18 year old now at uni):
1) Take a working torch with spare batteries! 2) A screwdriver, scissors, sharp knife and duct tape 3) Make sure the tent has decent waterproofing/hydrostatic level - recommend Outwell. Ensure the tent has full height headroom and a decent living area with a completely sealable porch area. When rain comes - as it WILL - ALL wet things stay in the porch area, the rest of the tent stays dry. Choose 'bathtub' type flooring so any ground water runs underneath. Don't buy where sleeping areas are separated by a thin curtain. Ours has 2 bedroom areas opposite each other either side of the main living area, porch out front. Ventilation openings to allow through flow of air essential - tents get hot in the sun. Tent carpet adds a soft, warm feel to living area. A warm sleeping bag - go for min. 2 season warmth levels as it does get cold at night and a woolly hat . Thermarest mattresses - NOT cheap but incredible for support and under body warmth. Take as little as you can and buy stuff as you feel you need - it would be far too easy to spend a mini fortune in a camping shop and not use stuff. We use a trailer and have a double ring camping stove with camping gas bottles - 1 full and 1 being used, a chair each. Coolcamping.co.uk for camp sites - some allow open fires. And just ask for more advice or favourite camp sites if you wish.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Some great and very helpful advice there.
I will update as and when. Looking forward to this new venture with the family and the trusty Volvo. Thanks Jonathan. |

My wife and I gave camping a shot a couple of years ago. I ended up pretty drunk and was ill in the morning. Decided then and there we were getting a caravan. That's the reason we have a Volvo as the Honda CRV just didn't have the guts to tow comfortably. We love caravanning. Our two dogs love it as you could imagine and we go away almost every weekend we can from April to October. Nothing more relaxing and we loved it that much we upgraded our caravan and have one with a proper double bed. Volvo's are great tow cars.
