It seems that this is only a "one-time" event as you said... In this case, I second domhart to strip-down the 2 bikes and put them in the boot. Buy one of those bike multi-tool, check youtube on how-to videos and you're good to go.

I've build 2 of them. Got all the toolset I need Boot space is at premium, though.. So either roof or boot door. Speedwise- I'll be doing 65mph tops, as I'll be avoiding motorways. Unnecessary expenditure, views are much better on side roads.. And so on.. As for one- off.. Yes.. One off for this car. I think I'll check for that towbar underneath, and if there isn't any, I'll get a strap-on just for this trip. A towbar is on a "must have" list for successor for quite a while now.. |

One that hangs on the back AND but is "high" or "high mount" may well do the job.
This sort of thing, theers plenty to choose from. Can always buy used. http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike...-cycle-carrier

I assume with 1000-mile journeys that youre going abroad, last thing you want is the hassle and ferry/chunnel cost of a trailer.
IF you are precious about your adult bikes than the hang-on carriers arent great, the bikes will wiggle about and the paint be rubbed off. The towbar-mounted ones are best, especially those which hve an arm to clamp each bike individually. They are expensive, even used, but youll get most of y money back should you sell. Fitting a towbar is diy, but if youre selling the car etc I get it that y dont want to All a compromise, pays yer money, takes yer choice.

I had one that strapped to the tailgate when I had my Renault Espace. Carefully fitted it was quite secure- 2 straps at the top to the roofrails, standing on the bumper with 2 straps onto the underside of the car, 1 strap to each side of the tailgate. The sideways straps are the issue on the Volvo as the tailgate does not have a solid frame or bodywork for the edge of the glass so the straps are hooked to the edge of the glass.
Even at 'just' 65mph the wind load on the bikes will be quite high, and the normal bumps and corners will pull at the bikes too. Most racks for the back of the car will also mean the bikes are blocking the lights and number plate so you'd need a socket and lighting board even if you didn't have a towbar, if you have the bikes high enough not to block the lights you would risk them being up so high you'd struggle to get into some car parks, ferries etc.

The best (least worst, perhaps?) strap-on, as you call them is the Saris Bones 3-Bike rack - it's £100 and a bit, but is very strong and stable.
If you get a cheaper one, do make sure that you just check its tightness after the first say 20 miles, as these are not really the ideal way to carry bikes. HTH. |

I have one very similar to this... It's halford own brand and I have 2 of the 4 different brackets that were need for fitting. It may fit a P2 V70. I can't use it so if it will fit, I'm willing to sell it to you.

There are ways around that. Either postage or it thats too expensive, I will be at the Club's AGM in Gaydon come march. There is normally a meet at the Ace Cafe in London, if I don't go I might be able to persuade somebody to ferry it down.
If you are interested, give a me a few days and I will search the deepest darkest corners of my garage for it and take some photo's. |
