The Detailing World forum is very good for hints, tips and advice. The deeper you go, the more it'll cost you if you let it.

Like Sasha, I do the below;

Snow foam pre-wash
Bucket wash with a shampoo, not a shampoo and wax combination using a wash mitt not a sponge.
Wheel cleaner
Then if it's time, clay the car to remove baked on crud.
Wash again.
Apply polish
Apply wax
Apply sealent.

Products I use are;
Valet Pro PH Neutral Snow Foam
Autoglym Shampoo or Muc Off Car Shampoo or a Meguiars Shampoo
Meguiars Clay bar kit
Autoglym Super Resin Polish
Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection
Meguiars Wax or Muc Off Car Wax

End up with a lovely clean and shiny car

There's a hell of a lot of products available and Clean Your Car is a good website to buy from - http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/ - or there's Halfords who stock both Meguiars and Autoglym stuff.

I guess it really depends on how into car cleaning you are or want to be. With few products you can do pretty well, but if you're wanting to remove swirls and light scratches that's getting into the realms of machine polishers and cutting compounds.

I like the satisfaction of seeing how clean it is after the time I put into it. Snow foaming is fun too.

I wash the car, them clay bar to remove any contamination, if needed, this makes the paint surface so smooth, then use my DA polisher to polish then hand wax. I dont do this everytime though. I use chemical guys products and find the butter wet wax is brilliant and can b used on every exterior surface including the glass!

Turtlewax product are good if you’re cleaning on a budget. The budget stuff does the job but it’s not so durable as the more expensive stuff. Cheap wax is better than no wax quite honestly. I use Autobrite products personally and I get very good results from them.

Don’t scrimp on trim gels and tyre gloss, they’re the one thing that needs to last. I found Autoglym tyre gel to be not the best. Your trim gel protects against weathering but apart from that a half decent wax will get you through.

If budget's an issue and a durable wax is required then Collinite 476s has to be in the Top 1 or so

I’ve never used it but I’ve heard it’s good. Poorboys do some good stuff too for a reasonable price.

I enjoy washing my cars (and motorbike), I find it theraputic. The end result and admiration from neighbours makes it worth it.

It also helps when it comes to selling. My 1999 S80, sold in 2009, with about 70k miles on the clock went onto the dealer forecourt instead of straight to auction because is it was so shiny. It was twice as old with twice the mileage of what they would normally display.

Tyre shine also makes a lovely job of the plastics in the engine bay.

If properly applied as per the the end stage of the processes above, then it'll still be on after a nuclear winter, never mind a British one.

Sadly, it doesn't smell of an Alpine Garden in May, nor an Ugli Fruit gently massaged on a maiden's thigh until it reaches a temperature of 34.71c, unlike some other waxes, but hey-ho, life's all about compromise
