The owner has my profound admiration, I don't think I could climb out of a P1800 after 30 miles let alone 3 million.

It's some achivement when all said and done.
Not read the article but has the engine been rebuilt? From experience of engines of the era 200,000 without a rebore and new bearings was an exception and distributors became increasingly inefficient as they wore, usually being replaced by 150,000 if you wanted any sort of economy and performance.

Original engine is a subjective term.
Original as in rebuilt many times I am happy to accept, original as in as it came out of the factory I have doubts on.

Paul.

Yes, I really can't see an "original" engine surviving 3 million miles. And I bet the odometer only counts in tens of thousands anyway.

Isn't this the world famous white P1800 in America still with the original owner, but isn't there some question mark over how many times the original engine has been rebuilt and what other restoration work has been carried out. I think Volvo like to create the impression it is 'just as it rolled off the factory production line when new'

It's had two rebuilds in 51 years.

First at 700,000 miles, the engine builder thought it was unnecessary but the owner Irv Gordon insisted as he couldn't imagine an engine not needing a rebuild at that mileage.

Second at 2,700,000 miles, broken piston rings.

Transmission developed an oil leak at about 750,000 miles.

It's a redblock, not some ****y Ford or French tat.

Proper Volvos are the ultimate recycleable car - in my opinion.

Cool Are we there yet, Irv?

Even if the engine has been 'molested' that is still bl**dy good going!!!

He.Irv Gordon, the owner, from new,Also recommends regular oil and filter changes, stick with the same brand of oil,and brand of petrol, use only Volvo parts,
They, The Car and Irv,must at least be on 'nodding terms' by now? after all these years together. Perhaps they are known,by their friends as Darby & Joan.

Regards,Keith.

He and the car are in the Guinness Book of Records. Only used Castrol oil and Volvo filters and serviced precisely as per Volvo. I did read that Castrol stripped the engine down to see the extent of wear, which was apparently minimal. When he did did first million Volvo presented him with, I think, a 240 and at 2 million a 740. Don't know what he got when he broke the 3 million! I may not be accurate with the models gifted by Volvo.
