Smile Worn Axle rebuild or replace?

Hello,

My drive shafts clicks when shifting gears from forward to reverse. Same noise in this video: https://youtu.be/S9c3I53TbwI

They Clicking And/Or Popping Noise when I steering at low speed (like parking). Same noise in this video: https://youtu.be/sNuEUwOq4k0

I got two offers:

1) Repair / Rebuild the original VOLVO drive shafts for total cost of EUR 130 - 150 .

2) Buy a replacement for EUR 200 + install it EUR 100 = EUR 300
The replacement is not the factory one:
https://www.polar-parts.co.uk/Drive-...04831?curr=EUR
https://www.polar-parts.co.uk/Drive-...04832?curr=EUR

I fear that the rebuild is not as good as a replacement. I heard that the rebuilt one good for another 1-2 years then I can throw it to the garbage. The new car part maybe not the original VOLVO but I heard it will be good for 5 years.

Good evening, 'sirdani'. I know little about your specific motor car, but, generalising, I would want to know more about what, precisely, is included in the rebuilt unit. Many years ago, I purchased an, allegedly, 'rebuilt' axle for a small Ford. I strongly suspect that the 'rebuild' consisted of little more than degreasing and a coat of paint. The unit was little better than the worn one that it replaced. Do the rebuilders offer any type of warranty on their units?

Secondly, wouldn't the life of any unit, new or rebuilt, be more mileage than time based? If you cover only a modest mileage, the times to failure seem very conservative. I would expect a conscientiously rebuilt unit, using quality parts and driven considerately, to last rather longer than just a year or two.

Regards, John.

Look far and wide for a shaft shop. Send it to another country if need be.
"Replacement" shafts have a percentage of misfits. You'll designate manual or automatic transmission and get the other.
I'm fortunate in that I live near one.

This is only a minor problem the splines knocking in the hub , if you have a volvo dealer near you they will know what to do , 2 new hub drive shaft bolts but they must be torqued as per volvo instructions .

If this does not cure it as it has been neglected , then some loctite on the first 20 mm of the outside end of the splines should do it . DO not put loctite all over the full spline or you wont get them off again when you need to , Volvo have a hydraulic puller if that happens .

Mine was doing that over the last 60,000 miles and still does. I would not take action myself?

Just replaced the shafts. There is oil leaking from the left side. Is that misfits?

Probably a worn oil seal on the gearbox if it wasn't replaced at the same time?

I think this is the key post here. It’s axle ping and Volvos do it a lot. Mine was doing it at 70k and still does it at 120k but I won’t be doing anything about it…
