Mine was also intermittent - sometimes 3 weeks between occurrences, and I could also restart the car but after a "cooling off" period of up to 30 minutes.

It manifested as a typical "bad solder joint" symptom which sometimes does and sometimes doesn't conduct. The dealer guided by Volvo tech support had the epiphany based on that symptom to investigate the fuel pump relay, which solved the problem for me.

PS It showed no diagnostic code for this problem - but then it was a 2002 model!

Keep us posted!

Update on this problem, it still does it but today i found if i went over 2.5-3.0 K revs it would stutter like crazy. So i had to come 50 miles home in as high a gear as it would allow, but the daftest thing is it only does it in the first 4 gears, mind you there's not many places you can get above 3K revs in top gears.Any ideas on that ?

Further to this post i started turning the stop/start off.Two months ago i had the battery changed by my indy. The stop/start worked for about a week then stopped working altogether so i just carried on with it not working. Then i found a load of codes using a cheapo off ebay and my iphone app so i cleared them all and the stop/start started working again. On Monday it stopped working again and yesterday after a 100 mile run i found a message saying the battery is being charged and s/s will not work while battery is being charged. How can the battery still be charging after doing over 500 miles in 1 week ?

Regarding the stop start because of charging battery:
I understand that there is some battery monitoring that would need reset when the battery was changed. (One of the solutions is a button pressing sequence, but there is some indication, that may only work on the models with the TFT screen, which I think your car predates, but possibly worth a shot.)
If that was not done, the system thinks you have an old battery and behaves differently. There are some lengthy discussions you can look through on the matter and procedures here:

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...highlight=stop

Also lengthy discussion on stop/start here, but this seems to be more "Start/Stop requires service" than just charging the battery:
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...hlight=battery

There are plenty of stop/start threads if you search for them, as it is quite common for the car to throw this up.

Rocinante Thank's for replying, My indy changed the battery for me using Vida and it worked for a few days but what i can't understand is after driving 500 miles in a week the battery needs charging.I am going on a run now so i will connect my phone and look for what's happening.

Are you sure, he's reset what needs reset on the battery ?

If so I get what you're saying regarding the 500miles thing, but it seems to have been a weak point on these for a long time, so there might not be a solution, besides regularly charging it.
One of the theories though, is that part of the issue is apparently the batteries aren't charged all the time as an energy efficiency thing and only tries to charge only when recovering energy, but you would assume that if it's telling you the battery needs charged it would start doing it, but I don't know if it does, so even after 500 miles, it wasn't necessarily charging that whole time. So if you depleted that battery by doing less miles previously, it might take time to get the charge up. Also sitting on the motorway will charge it very little, as there's few points where there's excess energy ie slowing down. (just what I've read)

The 2nd post I list, is for the newer model, but does seem to have a list of possible faults including "..new cable, new Aux battery and new control module ..."

Other options discussed regarding the stop/start :
  • current drain from something
  • faulty new battery
  • Your alternator.

As I said there are quite a few threads on this, if you want to find them and trawl through them.

The other thing I noted was the app you are using ,and presumably an OBD reader. Do you leave the dongle plugged in to the car all the time ? I think this can drain the battery.
