ABS diagnostic conundrum 1997 V70R
Got a bit of a problem and wondering if anyone has any suggestions?
My V70R had the ABS and TRACS lights on. So I took out the ABS module and sent it off to a place I found online. £55 did the job and it seemed to have worked. Unfortunately the lights came back after 4 months. The guy offered a lifetime warranty on his repair so I contacted him. He says he’ll need a OBD print off to identify the fault. Fair enough I suppose, as the problem isn’t necessarily in the ABS module and he’s already resoldered the dodgy joints (I assume that’s what he did). Problem is, no garages seem to be able to do OBD on my car. They don’t have the software for pre-2000 vehicles. Even a place advertised as a Volvo specialist! Seems my choices are:- Take to main dealer for OBD - they’ll charge a fair bit and want to do any work needed Try and buy a OBD device and do it myself - but I’m no mechanic Send module to another online repairer and cross fingers Has anyone any suggestions? I’m at a bit of a loss. I know this ABS module is a common bugbear problem so I’m guessing others might have found themselves in this position.

You need Vol-FCR, which is available all over the internet, and then a £15 vagcom cable

Cheers. The cables are on eBay for under a tenner. None specify Volvo but I assume they’re pretty generic?

Pretty much, just make sure it's a KKL FTDI one.

A place called Volvo Diagnostics. He advertises the service on eBay.

Totally agree I to have fixed loads of these generally if the vehicle is scanned as a 2000 the diagnosic tool will use basic protocols and should be able to give you any P codes that are stored I have a snap on solus pro a TEXA and a Hella Hitman Mega Max 66 and all will read and clear my V70R which is a 1998 but has the ME7 engine management system I have use either of them to read codes and clear for ABS Airbag and engine

Would you say it’s worth buying a scanner? I see there are some fairly cheap ones but I know nothing about these things.

VolFCR is a scanner and will cost you the price of a vagcom cable.
