Re the noise, yes the starter is a little rough on engagement but it is being disengaged from drive when the engine starts - if it doesn't they literally scream.

I suspect that the noise is coming from either the cam belt rubbing on the block/backplate/flange somewhere or that the cam belt is overtight. Did you fully relocate ie push the piston (tensioner) back in before fitting the new belt & etc.?

Hi ASt85, Thanks for your comments / suggestions as always. I know the sound you mean as I had that when I previously replaced the starter motor on this car, several years back. I am pretty sure I fitted the timing belt correctly. Also, surely if that was the cause it would be there more often than just on start-up? I have recently done what SteveSarre kindly suggested, ie I started the car without using the starter motor (by rolling down a hill and engaging the clutch), there is no sound (i immediately switched off and restarted with the starter motor and the sound was back). So, I am very much thinking this sound relates to the operation of the starter motor, perhaps the solenoid failing to properly withdraw the pinion.

The starter motor kicks the engine into life rather quicker than bump starting. If something is rubbing on the timing belt cover you should be able to feel it if you put your hand on it when someone else starts the car. An in the ear test with a length of dowel/broomstick/heavy screw driver/ or similar should also detect the sound if you press it against the cover. Even just pushing the cover around with the engine running might show up the noise. Perhaps a missing or loose screw. Not having enough belt tension may also do it. The sound is very much out in the open rather than hidden in the bell housing.

In case anyone else has a similar nose at some point - just to let you know, I have replaced the starter motor and thankfully the noise has gone.
