Engine System Service Required??
New (to me) car is a '57 S80 2.4D auto. The first long run today, 250 miles and half way though I received one of those polite messages that shows up in the right hand LCD panel, saying ' Engine System Service Required'. No full on warning lights and no noticeable issues. Any idea what this might be??

Has it been serviced recently? Often happens when the oil is filled up to the full mark, rather than where the sticker under the bonnet tells you to.

Yes, recently serviced. I have just used the dip stick on a cold engine to check the level and it is 5/6 the full (in the 'xxxxxx' markings). Is this a serious / urgent thing to worry about?
Thanks |

There are also DIY options that you can find by searching this Forum, but since it is their small error the garage should do it for free and save you the hassle.

If the oil is removed to 3/4 of dipstick full reading the message will reset within a couple of days driving. I had the same problem when a so called "Volvo Specialist" service my V70 some years ago.

Its most likely too much engine oil either after the service or the dpf not having a chance to re-generate which means diesel somehow ends up in the sump pushing up the oil level. Usually if thats the case, you'll have a 'soot filter full. See manual' error code too.
Either case remove some oil to about halfway on the dipstick. Error should clear in a few days or after a certain number or start/stops. |

If this keeps happening you will have your engine oil over diluted with diesel which cannot be what Volvo or the oil manufacturers would have specified as a lubricant, so you need to find out why the DPF is failing to complete regeneration and take appropriate steps and also change the engine oil to improve its specification. Apparently on later models Volvo modified the system but I suspect that this is merely to limit the warning rather than stop the aborted regeneration, but maybe I'm just being cynical!
