Default Belt change options

My V70 2.4 is having it's 10th birthday in a few months and is approaching the 100k miles mark too, so it is almost due an auxiliary belt and cam belt change.

My local Volvo garage have quoted me £507 to change both. This includes a new tensioner for both belts. They say a new water pump in not necessary.

Having spent £250 on a new steering lock module, £300 on a new inlet manifold (that exploded!) 4 new discs and 8 pads and a new windscreen (due to the infamous leak) It's a lot of money I've spend recently so I'm looking for options to save.

1) a local garage willing to do a good job for a more reasonable price
2) I will do it myself if it's not too complicated and there is a good guide I can follow, How easy or difficult is the job?

Many thanks

Sure chesterd5 has done a video on how too on here.
Belive locking tools are needed for the cams and the volvo ones seem to differ from generic ones in that they lock the sprockets as well as the shaft. Belive it is possible to do it with the generic ones but given the potential for disaster I'm chickening out and taking it to the dealers for my cam belt change.

300 tdi landrover I can give you chapter and verse, do mine every 30k, but if you get those wrong it's a few bent push rods not holed pistons and smashed valves.

Paul.

I know you've spent a lot of money lately, but I had mine done at the dealers at 92k. It cost me... but not the cost of the engine and gave me a bit of piece of mind.

OK an update.

I have received a quote from my small local garage for replacing both belts plus all the tensioners.

At £588 it is £80 MORE than Volvo want.

It appears that I can buy the 2 new belt kits and tensioners from my local motor factors for £126 (Gates kit) The Hours quoted from local garage suggest a 2.5 hours labour at £40 plus vat so I arrive at a figure of approx £250 for the job? not sure where the extra £338 comes from????

I think I will do it myself - someone has suggested that CHesterd5 has done a video for this, but I can't find it here.

CAn someone point me to a link somewhere I can find a how to instruction or better still video.

Thanks

Search for cheshired5 on 'you tube' and a list of videos he has prepared will come up.

His videos are very thorough and should help you decide if it's something you could manage yourself.

Terry.

Sorry, my mistake his 'youtube' tag is SiRobb

That video looks excellent, thanks. I would feel quite confident doing that myself. Even had a new electric impact wrench for my birthday this year too

However, that engine looks different to mine. I think my model is a later one as the oil filler on mine in on the top right. Mine is a 2.4D (not a D5) 2009 163 BHP with no swirl flaps.
I would assume the procedure is the same - can anyone confirm?

The decision on whether to do this myself or pay the garage has been taken from me. The auxilliary belt snapped this weekend and I'm not in a position to repair it myself this week.
So i took it volvo this morning and I'll be crying in a beer later when I have to pay the bill

The upside of course is that it's done now and with genuine parts.

I would say to anyone who is using the guide of ten years or 108k miles before changing belts is replace the auxilliary belt earlier, the one that snapped on mine looked very cracked.

The aux belt replacement schedule is half the cam belt schedule so it's done at every 54K. Thus it gets changed on its own between cam belt changes and also gets changed when the cam belt is changed. Very important as an aux belt failure can derail the cam belt and that can wreck the engine. It's very strange that the aux belt is specified to a lower standard than the cam belt which is really of a very high quality but nevertheless can be undermined by an aux belt failuree.

I had my timing belt replaced on my 2007 S80 2.4d last month, but there was no mention that the auxillery belt should be changed. Is there only one auxillery belt on the S80 & V70, or more than one auxillery belt? I know some other manufacturer's used more than one belt, but not sure about Volvo.

This is surprising really, considering the work was done at a Volvo specialist. I would have thought it would have been good practice to change the auxillery belt considering its infront of them when doing the timing!

How much is it to change the auxillery belt and tensioner approximately? My S80 has nearly 102k on it. I don't want to risk the auxillery belt snapping & wrecking everything!
