Default alarming engine noise and warning lights!

came home to switch the engine off and once off, noticed a loud screeching like a faulty fan running. on exploration, the black ribbed unit on top of the engine is making an alarming noise. (Under the dust cover) it switches itself off after minute or so.
When I tried switching on again the engine warning light was on. Then the red triangle appeared.....
Xc60 D4 2014 with the Volvo 2.0 engine. Just had the EGR replaced a few months ago.
What sits atop this engine? I cannot find an engine schematic. I will try to upload a video I took.....

it sounds like an old engine running.....but it is not!

My car had a similar problem a while ago. My code reader indicated a faulty throttle valve actuator. Confirmed by local dealer and repaired by them. Cost about £300 including labour. Not related to egr issues. Seems to be a not uncommon fault in diesel engines from other manufacturers too.

Can't you read the engine code? That would really point you in the right direction.

I'm confused by the suggestion of ' faulty throttle valve actuator'. When did diesel engines have throttles?

My friendly mechanic is plugging it in later today. He is reliable. It has a full vsh, having had the new egr and related bits replaced at 45k. 6k ago.
Whatever it is, it sounds electronic and is pre start and post turn off as you park it up....lasts for 30 secs.
The engine seems to run fine.

Does anyone have an engine schematic ?

This site explains it well. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...tle-plate.html

On my car, the sound was most obvious on starting and switching off the engine. The throttle body and actuator is on the front right right of the engine (on the left side as you look at the engine from the front). You could feel the vibration and noise from it when you knew where it was. Reading around the subject it seems that the flap in the throttle body gets sooted up then the gears in the actuator get stripped. You can buy repair kits online for some types on other makes of engine but not the Volvo unit.

Mechanic confirmed throttle valve issue on diagnostic. The only effect appears to be the noise it makes. Mpg has gone up !

Goes with the territory when following forums. As a visitor to the diesel engine forum you will have noticed that the 5 cylinder is not without it's problems.
I have a preference for 6 cylinder engines but my experience with my previous BMW 6 cylinder tug was a long running disaster forum topic of it's own. My Volvo VEA replacement has been a breath of fresh air in comparison. (There I go again; why do I keep tempting fate!)
