Cambelt and Water pump cost??
I've just bought a '57 Volvo S80 (2.4 D) which has now done 112,000 miles. The service book is full of stamps that make sense and don't cause any concern, but it's not clear to me if the cam belt and water pump were done with the last service (there is a hand written note in the service book to this effect, but on phoning the garage, they could not find any evidence it had been done....).
So, I thought I would get a quote for a cam belts / water pump change, via Whocanfixmycar.com - I have had 3 quotes back, £307, £216 and £300. I am surprised by the cost, as I was expecting a much higher quote for what I thought was quite labour intensive work...what am I missing, or do these quotes make sense??? Thanks! |

While you're having it done, renew the aux belt which is critical if it breaks as it can take the cam belt with it. The aux belt change schedule is half that of the cam belt so it should get changed when the cam belt gets changed and also half way through the cam belt change period.

belts
i wouldnt touch the water pump unless it shows cause for concern
deffo as above aux belt/tensioner,big failure point will be obvious if its a new belt once you get top cover off[remove engine mount and cover-15 mins or so] if you go that far pop a new belt on,its only about another 40 mins work... it cost me under £100 for volvo cambelt, tensioner, roller and 4 nuts/1 big nut another £60 or so for tensioner/aux belt and £25 for volvo stretch a/c belt[which i kept as spare as mine was just changed anyway Last edited by tonys1966; Apr 23rd, 2019 at 19:45. |

Make sure they use genuine Volvo belts and tensioners. As already mentioned, dont change the water pump unless it needs it and you must do the aux belt and tensioner as well.

I had the timing belt replaced on my 2007 S80 2.4D recently (101,000 miles), but I have no record of the aux belt being replaced & it wasn't suggested to me. Does it have more than one aux belt like some other cars do & what would it cost if a garage was to replace it approximately?
It'll give me an idea so I know I'm not getting overcharged. |

My local garage (who I trust) have quoted £380 inc to do all the belts (inc aux), tensioners, pump, coolant etc. A lot less scary than I thought!
Thanks for responses. |

Volvo replace both my auxilliary belt (due to it snapping!) and cam belt this week plus the two tensioner pulleys.
They quoted me £503 but only charged me £442 because volvo now supply both the auxilliary belt and pulley as one kit apparently saving £61. As above don't touch the water pump it is not necessary and volvo do not recommend you change it either.

How much are the aux belt & tensioner on their own? I've had the timing belt replaced, but want to do the aux belt to be safe.
