Car stereo - Vintage, modern or ?
I was not old enough to drive a Amazon when these cars where popular over here, but who-ha the cars was pop in the 80s. Many pimped the car to the unrecognizable and in my eyes screwed the car all over to look like pimpmobiles. Velvet, fluffy dashboards and the rest.
Completely on the opposite side is me, I want to have a "normal looking" car, no fluffy crap and the rest - but I would like to have some form of propper sound system in the car. In the 80s Pioneer "rack systems" was popular and I do actually have my uncles old rig, not as large as this but EQ,tape and small amp is there. 80s rack.jpg Then I might get my hands on a rig which came a little later which has one of the first CD players (fully working) which looks like this: 90s rack.jpg Think of it like Andrew Dice Clays rig in "The adventure of Ford Fairlane " where he has a - in my eyes - really cool (now vintage) Alpine stereo rack. The car has as we know no midle "dash" around the gear shifter so a small custom thing needs to be made in case I go this route. The original vintage radio which don't work would be at its normal place. The other option is to leave everything as is, the original radio on the right side and then some how hide some form of modern unit (which needs to be bought) and possibly use an iPod, iPhone to play music. Have any one done similar thoughts and in case are willing to share their installation with pics ? Speakers in the rear - vintage shown on the shelf or something hidden under some form of protective grill or speaker cloth ? Tweeters in the front? Midrange in kicker panel ? Hope to hear and see your solutions :-) |

No affiliation, but this vendor advertises on the MG forums in the U.S. I was thinking about contacting him for sound for my PV 444.
Now, if only he did air conditioning. http://www.outofsightaudio.com/ |

I like to fit a vintage radio in the standard location, for the period look, and a modern, full-featured system, hidden to prevent interest by thieves. I would never consider one of those huge systems you show...there's just no room in a car for those unless you want it to be an intentional eyecatch. Speakers should also be as discretely located as possible... That way, you will have the best of both worlds: Original look, but digital high-power audio... Cheers |

I think i would go with a neat DAB radio with USB socket about the size of a pack of cigarettes for your music , the main box with amplifier could go under the seat ..

Personally the old non working radio would be in place where it always has - I can't see me cutting out and damaging the dash for any new stuff. I must say that I like this option http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts...nsole/1052807/ When I was a kid the pimp my ride guys made some stuff to put car stereos in but nothing like this. This was as I understand it a original addition from Volvo as far as I can read. This looks much better than that plastic shelf floating on top of the dash and would make it more like a normal car where you could drop keys and what not in a easy way. Having one made with a car stereo pocket in stead of the clock would for me be a very tempting option. Which unit to drop in I'm still debating. Speakers would be hidden - I do not want any of the 80s-90s speakers parked in the back of the car. There would for sure be speakers but I would try to make them hidden on the shelf. Same with tweeter and midrange in the front. Any one which have pics to share on their installs ? |

50 years ago I had a nice '53 Porsche 356 coupe, sold it after 2 years for $4K...
Check out the ratty derelict '52 coupe that just sold on BaT for $145K, I know stupid. NO better sounding period radio than that Blaupunkt, and they can be repaired. And NO better looking one just sitting there, working or not... 🙂 |

I am going to fit this in my 122.
Works perfect - better sound on this 8 track player, than the Radiomobile, I have in my other classic. |
