Firstly check that your steering limiters/stops are still intact, if they are perhaps they need a bit of grease on them, they do wear so might need replacing......they are on the wishbones..../

Hi,

I had just the same sound it was embarrassing when parking.

Thought it was the upper spring mounts (they were bad but not the source of the noise).

Fitted new upper spring mounts struts and spring plastic seat ends and rubber bump stop inside the spring.

Noise still there!

Finally the offside lower ball joint sheared off. Repairing the damage and fitting new ball joint and surprise the noise was gone.

Not sure if it was the joint making the noise or having to reassemble the driveshaft but the noise has not come back.

Worth checking the spring mountings. But don't stick your head under the car while moving the steering end to end as that's when the ball joint is under most strain and if it gives out then the car and wheel will find a new low point.

When the strut turns and hits the steering limiter the steering still tries to turn further and this is what puts the strain on the ball joint.

Find out what side the noise comes from and try to narrow down the area it comes from.

Bob

I'll take a look, and check the lower arms as they have been changed then the noise started a few weeks after,

took a look today,
the power steering pump sounds very noisy on full lock,
and looks like the top NS suspension bush has cracking in the rubber,

going to get very expensive this car, not really worth spending a lot on it,
might look into scrapping it

When the lower arms are changed, they need the bolts through the bushes where they attach to the subframe tightening with the wishbones under some load (i.e. some weight on them or jacked up to a position similar to that when the car is on it's wheels). If you tighten those bolts fully with the arms dangling free, the bushes can detach or split later on under load, could be that if the noise has only started since replacement?

If the noise is only under hard lock, then it could be the PAS pump as you say - check the fluid level, could just be low before replacing the pump?

i tightened the wish bone bolts with wheels on the floor, but good call i'll double check them,
PAS fluid is at the correct level and new, noise from pump all the time now, getting louder the longer i drive.
