Volvo 740 centre vent removal
I want to remove the centre dashboard vents on my 1990 740 as a couple of the flaps are broken but I can't work out how it comes out - I can't see any obvious screws and the Haynes manual just says 'remove vents'.
Any clues please. |

I'm pretty sure you need to remove the strip that runs underneath them along the dash first.
They then just pull out... |

Assuming you have the facelift 740 and if so, that the interior is similar to the facelift 760 in layout at least, this is what you have to do :
First of all, locate the screw in the top of the glovebox that retains the long trim strip and remove it - Pozidriv stubby screwdriver works well for this! Once removed, use something wide and flat like a paint scraper to get under and behind the trim strip and ease it out working you way along. Once out, you should see two screws under the centre vents, if you push the top of the vents in as if they would be blowing towards the roof, you should find another two screws, one in each vent hole Remove those 4 screws. On the other end of the dashboard, use the paint scraper to ease the other piece of trim out. Another screw underneath the drivers side vent and if you push the top of it in, you'll find another screw - remove these two. On the instrument surround in the "roof" of it, there are two more screws, hidden by a couple of small blanking pieces. Pop thees out with a small screwdriver then remove the screws. Now ease the rocker switch surrounds out with the paint scraper and let them dangle so you have room to pull the entire vent/instrument cluster surround panel out, easing along it as you go. You'll need to be a bit of a contortionist to get it over the steering wheel but it can be done.

Facelift 740s still have the same dashboard as pre-facelift. It isn't until the 940 they got the updated dash (and even that is different to 760/960)

I'll have a proper look the weekend. I need another set of vents so it might be evident on these. The on line parts manuals show clips, so presume these are sprung type ones. |

Yes, the clips shown in the manual just act to create an interference fit for the vents. Should be easy enough to persuade them to pull out of the dashboard. |

I remember struggling with this but can't remember exactly what the clips looked like. I do still have the vents sitting around so I can have a look at the weekend if that is of any help.

had a look this evening and the vents do just lever out, just enough to be able to get a thin blade in to press the spring clips in and extract.
I have found that on one side the two halves of the open/close flap have started to come apart, where it looks like the plastic welding appears to have been insufficient. This is causing the thumbwheel to miss the gear and so can't open it. Got a replacement one to fit, but now realise just how much dust has accumulated in the ducting and on the shutters so looks like I'll be taking them all out and giving them a good wash. |

A vacuum cleaner with the brush attachement is useful or even a paintbrush and vacuum cleaner nozzle for cleaning out the dust etc inside the vents.
As for the repair of the flaps, this stuff works well : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MILLIPUT-...D/390942475261 Get the black stuff, roll and shape it like Plasticine and push and mould it in place to recreate the "welded rivets". You can also wet your finger or a lolly stick, McDonalds coffee stirring stick or similar to smooth the surface and shape it nicely if you need to. I've used it successfully to recreate the plastic around the mounting holes on the underdash trim on mine and several other things. If you do get some, have a look at the manufacturers website too, loads more tips and tricks for using it. It sets rock hard, is very strong, can be drilled etc - i call it "Plasticine for Grown-ups" as it's as easy to use as Plasticine but sets like like what a grown-up wnts it to do.
