Default D4 2.4 181 AWD Tuning

I know this used to be discussed a lot but it doesnt seem to get discussed so much now.
I am in remotest Cumbria and was considering a Rica downloader remap or the racechip tuning box and had a few questions I hoped could be answered. The Polestar is too expensive as it only takes me to D5 levels even though it is the same mechanically.
  • Will the ecu need removing or can rica crack it remotely?
  • is the rica still a bit aggressive on other components as early posts suggested?
  • What is the max torque the dmf and manual gearbox can take?
Just looking for overtaking, important with the tourists and driving dead around here.

Any assistance appreciated

Is this the vea engine ?

If so not sure what tuning is available for it.
Wether the ECU can be remotely cracked , I doubt it as this was a source of irritation for 3rd party tuners, the effectiveness of volvos lock down. Also as I understand it but stand to be corrected, any information other than that needed to run the car is remotely stored by volvo and closely guarded.

As with any system there are those able to hack it, how effectively and at what cost is the question and only the owners can answer wether it's worth it or not.

Thanks for the reply. It is a 5cyl 2.4 pre vea, one of the last as they hadn,t got the awd quite going at that point.

Was hoping someone had recent experience of tuning via rica, tuning box or softloader.

If it's the D5 I have only used the volvo polestar upgrade, worth while but expencive if paying full price. In my view the cars should of been optimised from the factory not sell the reprograming at exorbitant prices.

There are as you say 3rd parties that offer more performance for less cost, mate has had very impressive improvements on his bmw 531 from Celtic tuning , they came to him and did the rewrite in half an hour including safeguarding the original settings so that they could be reinstalled to revert to standard if wanted.
