Default Fuel Filter Change D5 03

Hi all good to be back ....

I need to change the fuel filter (appears to have done quite a mileage potentially 80-90k, mmmmm, sorry car and contributing to the occasional engine service due light i get!).

It seems like a easy screw off job (with a bit of force than that im sure) and replace paper filter, is there anything i need to know like reducing the fuel pressure before removing etc. read a couple of users who have lost fair amounts of fuel, just need pointing in the right direction if someone can help. Thanks

You'll lose the fuel in the filter bowl and thats it. VADIS says make sure fuel level is below 3/4 in the tank, but nobody seems to lose anymore fuelif the tank is ful.

The filter may be a bit reluctant to come off though, I used a filter strap wrench to get mine off.

I just removed the fuel filler cap to release the pressure then just unscrewed the canister (not paper although might be paper inside??) type filter from underneath the car.

Very Easy with very little fuel loss. I also topped the new filter up with the fuel that was in the old filter.

Think you probably have the metal can type. Check the dates on the old one to see how long it's been on.Priming the new filter can be done by letting the in tank fuel pump fill it for a bit or repeated cranking ( bit of a waste). I was going to fill it with the fuel from the old one but chickened out when I thought about the possibility of crud being introduced. Don't get a cheap filter , the injection system deserves the best - I always go Volvo.

The fuel filter appears to be a can which is very rusty with what looks like a drain plug at the bottom? think must be cannister, its a 163

You will save yourself a whole lot of engine cranking by hand-filling the new filter with diesel, prior to fitting.

Brim the filter, wait 30 secs and brim it again.
Screw it on hand tight and turn ignition key to second position.

Wait 10 seconds for in-tank pump to spin up, and the engine should fire within 1-2 seconds

Looks expensive for what appears to be non original equipment - personally I wouldn't fit anything other than a vovo original fuel filter.

It seems the in tank fuel pump is only just man enough for the job, any additional flow resistance may cause problems, specifically "engine service required" errors due to fuel starvation.

I had this problem on my D5, it became apparent at just over 3000rpm. When accelerating hard up hill the "engine service" warning would pop up on the dash, and the car would drop back to "get you home mode" until the engine was switched off and restarted, when all was well again until the next time.

Changing the fuel filter cured it.

Hengst make very good products.

I've done 80,000 on Mann diesel filters - I change it every 15,000 as I drive in Ireland where the diesel is sh**e.
You can pick up the WK713 cannister at any decent factor, around £75 for 6, or fleBay for £16 ea.

Mann are OEM to AUDI, VW.
