Theoretically there shouldn't be much difference but the auto should keep the engine in its most efficient range. Mine seems to vary little according to how it is driven, although according to the trip computer, contrary to following the change up light I am getting better consumption by keeping revs between 1800 and 2500rpm.

In truth my Polestar D4 has so much power and torque that you really don't need to drive it hard which is exactly why I was expecting much better of it by way of fuel consumption.

Incidentally it has also been run almost exclusively on a diet of BP and ESSO premium diesel, now using standard Shell, again there appears to have been a marginal improvement both in consumption and smoothness - although I hope that hasn't speeded the appearance of the dreaded EGR problem!
I'd expect better mpg from a manual than an auto.

In my experience Shell suits the D5 best. Also Polestar recommends high cetane fuel for cars running their engine maps. V+ has a cetane rating of about 58 compared to the standard stuff which is about 51.

Quote:
V-Power Nitro + Diesel has special detergents inside that break up deposits, allowing the engine's injectors to spray freely (like a fresh new watering can). As the fuel travels through the injectors, it picks up the deposits and cleans them out, restoring the injectors, giving you an optimised fuel spray pattern and thus better combustion.

V Power Nitro+ Diesel also has a higher cetane rating (or combustion speed) than some ordinary diesel. This higher rating (an inverse of the octane number in petrol) means it tends to produce less soot during combustion, minimising the likelihood of your injectors being blocked again once cleaned. Any newly-removed soot is burnt as part of the combustion process and ejected via the exhausts.

The likelihood of corrosion, meanwhile, is reduced thanks to better lubrication of the metal surfaces that fuel comes into contact with. It won't de-corrode your engine, but the film protects your engine surfaces, slows the rate of corrosion and ultimately contributes to better engine health.

There are always petrol options in all the ranges with the exception of the old XC90 which had it's petrol engines dropped because no one bought them.

This VEA engine also equips the new XC90? Cause it seems that XC90 doesnt have this EGR problem?!

It's been out nearly as long as the VEA engine has, and there are cars around with over 40k on them, maybe more, but it is not quite the same having a different turbo and the radiator blind like the V40 does. I don't believe the XC60 was fitted with the blind.

Really? - the XC60 with the VEA was released 3 years ago, the new XC90 wasn't even available to order then.

Roughly June 2014 when they started delivery in numbers. The new XC90 started delivery 7 months later.

Here's a video of the production line in December 2014. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afO-2MvWhn8

The xc90 version has an egr valve with a much stronger electric motor on it , designed in at the factory for some reason ..

How about the D2 Clan? I haven't noticed an EGR issue with the new VEA D2.

Default EGR & cooler replaced today

I collected my XC60 from the dealer this morning, the job sheet showed that both EGR and cooler have been replaced with "modified components" - the receptionist informed me that they haven't had a D4 so modified back.

Spotting that my D4 had had the Polestar power upgrade, the mechanic suggested replacing the exhaust and air filter with Polestar components, for a mere £1300! I neglected to ask them if they would offer me £1000 for the perfectly good exhaust currently on the car......

I had an extremely gentle saunter back along the A27 and got an amazing 37.7mpg out of it! In the reverse direction the loaned 1.5 Focus gave me 48.2, yesterday in quieter traffic 51.3mpg, so I am inclined to think it is my car being heavy on fuel rather than my right foot.
