Amazon: Inner Wing Stiffening

Just did the inner wing plate stiffening due to their being a small crack in the bottom lower corner. I know Volvo issued instructions on how to do this but I just made the plate to how I thought it would best fit and added the pressings to match the other pressings in the wing. Anyway the pics show the way I did it.

Volvo posted this mod in 1968, pretty late in the life of the Amazon. Probably thought a good idea after finding cracks on rally cars but the common rust in the chassis leg just behind that as it bends under the floor can make it a weak area. Rougher Swedish B roads more of a problem than ours.

There was an Estate on eBay a while back that had broken in half at this point due to rust. Not a pretty sight!

For rally cars or for fast road cars it is also best to box in that area on the inside. You box in the area over the chassis

Did think about that but you'd need to seal off both sides of the chassis rail otherwise it would just make for another rust trap when mud and water collect. It certainly would stiffen things up. I did do a little seam welding but that was a bit of pita. I also thought about deleting all the flanges which are spot welded together and butt weld them instead as they are just moisture traps and only there for ease of manufacture, but I decided to leave the original look in the end but again that would of helped in stiffness and less chance of rusting.

I'd have a look Russ, easy to see. Like Derek said it gets a little rust there and that adds to the problem. The crack was probably only 1 1/2inches long. I didn't attach a photo but I welded up the crack and then weld overlayed the area, ground the weld smooth and welded the small length of seam along the chassis rail before putting in the plate also.
