1 for the Engine Mgment System & 1 for the Gauge ... if the engine aint Boiling then I would suspect either a Blocked Rad or a duff Gauge Sensor .. Keith

Keith, Its only got a single sensor, the temp sensor feeds the signal to the ECU (140BHP Denso) which then schedules the radiator cooling fan to come on at low speed with an engine temp of 106 deg C and high speed at a temp of 114 deg C. The same signal also feeds to the DIM which contains the gauge.
Give this car the correct resistance within the range it expects and both the gauge and cooling fan work as expected, when I checked it last Saturday the temp sensor was reading around 4400 Ohms which equates to a temp of around 7 deg C but the engine was around 30 Deg C so I would have expected closer to 2000 Ohms on the sensor. I then connected a decade resistance box to the car inlue of the temp sensor and set it to 240 Ohms which is around 90 Deg C, the fan stopped and the gauge went to normal. Simple diagnosis, change the sensor because its gone out of range, because when you give the car the correct signal everything works. WRONG. For two days with the new sensor fitted the car behaves then starts to throw over temp warnings with the fan running all the time, it doesn't appear to be a wiring fault as over temp readings would be caused by low resistance, this car is showing signs of higher than expected resistance on the temp sensor circuit otherwise the fault is pointing at the ECU - Mike |

Has this ever had a tuning chip on it from eBay the type that fool the engine temp sensor?
As I know my v40 did This as someone before me had put one on the car and it did this It took a new ecu and software reboot to sort it |

Is this a 2.4 petrol model?
If so there is a 2003 model on Autotrader with 117k Miles for £1,289 tonight. Autotrader link Based on that I'll offer £800 for the car as it has an unknown fault that could be expensive to fix. I'd come with cash and take it away with no comebacks. Last edited by costajus; Jan 22nd, 2012 at 21:21. |
