Default Air box outlet pipe

Hi all

I have noticed the outlet pipe from the air box is covered in metal patches (lead i think), i have included a pic but not a great view to be honest. Don't know what they are there for?

Thank you Daim. If they are covering any holes, what on earth would have caused them as there is quite a lot of patch work been done, and any idea on how much a replacement would be and if anyone has a part number please?

Many thanks

Possibly a bit of heatshielding going on there.
Is it near the exhaust manifold or anything that could generate a bit of heat?

Not really, the only thing near the patched up side is the battery box and at the back of the pipe near the bulk head. Not near anything that hot really??

Ah! Battery you say!

Is the battery above the outlet pipe?
Reason I ask, is that there could have been a possible leak of battery acid & corroded through the pipe.

Was a common problem on one of my previous cars.

Yes, battery is slightly above but it's in a compartment with a lid on it. Maybe it's possible the battery box has been replaced but no other damage is visible either? Gonna see about replacing it as it's obviously not how it should be!

Thanks for the replies
