To ascertain the various trim specs for 940's of that era (and late 700Series) that you may want when buying a new car you went to the Main Dealer and picked up a couple or so sales booklets most important of which were:

1) The Model Range - showing everything cosmetic and equipment fitted as standard for any variant in the range.

2) The Accessories - showing all the goodies on offer.

3) The 'official' Price List - showing what you got for your buck for each model variant and then the price of all those goodies you might desire that could be ordered as optional extras on what particular variant you might want to order if not included.

The final exercise was to decide what you wanted, do the math and how big your pocket was before having a little natter with the Main Dealer about a little money off the rrp for the package!!

Default my cars

i have always wondered about this, it does seem rather confusing, i will add my experiences,,,
The first 940 i owned was a 1997 Torslanda manual which came with dog guard , air con, half leather, wooden trim iirc
the second i owned briefly was a 1997 Celebration, this came with all of the above but had cruise control and rear parking sensors.
My current car is a 1997 Classic which has air con , half leather but no roof rails (which i prefer)
i have seen proper poverty spec ones for sale with full cloth and winding winding windows!

I'm sorry, but your information is false.

The 940 did have an optional passenger airbag, although I have only seen it in left hand drive markets. Around this time Volvo did not bother fitting a passenger airbag as standard because they felt the SIPS offered sufficient protection.

Let's see a picture then...

Volvo renowned for safety couldn't be arsed to fit an extra airbag as standard? Yeah, right.

I'd be interested to know from the people who say they have 'full leather' front seats, whether or not they're actually leather or 'pleather' seats. I'm sure you're saying full leather because you don't have material seats or the half and half flavour, but mine have worn on the bolster by the seatbelts and I can clearly tell that from the uncharacteristicly tough feel and thickness of the material and the layers of material/mesh and webbing in the sub layers of the material that is isn't actually real leather. The front seats feel way harder than the rear which I know are real leather. In my 91' 960 the front seats are 100% leather but in the 940 i'm not so sure.

I've got a 97' Classic and it has;

Heated seats
Cruise control
Air con
8 speakers (two in the rear pillar)
Driver airbag
Boot cover
Dog guard
6 disc changer in the boot

Few of which would probably have been found on a baseline 'classic' model.

I suspect you would find that what people describe as 'full leather' were actually described by Volvo as 'leather faced' which supports Casheye's description of the construction of his seats.

As to things like dog guards, boot covers, mud flaps, cargo liners and such like these never formed part of a spec, or featured in the 'price list' as optional factory fitted extras.

These items were featured in the Accessories Catalogue and you bought them directly via Main Dealer who fitted them prior to delivery. They also formed part of the bargaining process to see what the Dealer would throw in for free on top of the discount offered! Bob
