Over the past few days I've fitted one of the Polish exhaust systems to my Dd5 AWD, replaced the sticking nearside front brake caliper, and the offside one as a precaution, using the nearly new ones from my breaker.
Also fitted new offside front wheel bearing, which only came to light when the noisier nearside one was changed. Still have new rear discs, pads, swap offside rear caliper and change fuel filter to do. Very pleased with the exhaust system, nice and quiet, but my claustrophobia kicked in a couple of times whilst I was fitting it in my inspection pit! |

Today I fitted our S80's Bronze/150k HMC badge and sticker (even though it's 50k past that already!) and as a reward for being such a comfy dependable car I also replaced the clutch position sensor with one from a scrapyard V70 since the ceramic substrate was cracked on the original. Not before stripping/cleaning/rubbing an HB pencil over the tracks to reinstate some of the carbon. Also fitted about 4.7K in parallel with it as it was still a little high tripping a fault with the pedal fully up. Lower end seemed fine about 540 Ohms so should be ok for a while now, need to check if we have cruise again now, I've missed that! £3 quid from the scrappy and a bit of fettling certainly beats £40odd for a new one...

Had a rear number plate cause me some consternation; stupid plastic screws have UV hardened and become brittle. You’d have thought that a plastic screw in a metal thread would come out easily enough.
Gert big self rapper sorted that out then... |

Finally got round to doing some much needed maintenance to the NSF on the V70... new wheel bearing, new driveshaft and new anti-roll bar link. Oh, and a "new" wheel (second hand, but slightly more round than the original!) The potholes and terrible road edges round here have wreaked havoc on the poor thing.
Thankfully all went as well as could be expected apart from the sickening moment where the brand new driveshaft over-extended whilst trying to manoeuvre the steering knuckle back into the hub carrier and locked solid. Happily, despite many posts online claiming that the inner CV joint cannot be rebuilt if this happens, it certainly can - and isn't even all that difficult if you know how (though it helps to have four hands.) Basically you get an assistant to stand the driveshaft on a bench with the inner joint at the bottom (having removed the clip from the big end of the boot) and guide the three bearing races into the three flat sides of the housing, wobbling them inwards or outwards as required until it slides back down. Must pass on a recommendation for SKF - I don't know how long they've been selling direct to the public, but their website is excellent, offering the correct parts for your car - prices are fantastic, much cheaper than ECP, GSF etc, and delivery was very quick indeed for both items I ordered. Not often I'm so impressed with a car parts supplier! |

The V70 Torslander passed another MOT today with no advisories - the tester replaced the front N/S indicator bulb with no charge -
The original bulb hadn't blown, but stopped working whilst the hazards were on half way through the test due to a poor base contact. The choice now is which V70 I sell - the 2001 Torslanda with 53 weeks MOT or the 2004 T5 with 39 weeks MOT - common sense says one of them has to go - if I hadn't re-profiled the Torslanda's near side doors on a bollard in a church car park (with the able assistance of a well meaning soul) I think I'd probably keep it....but the T5 is just so much fun to drive!

Correction the T5 has 41 weeks MOT - thereby increasing my dilemma.

Finally got round to buying a trolly jack and axle stands (big 6 ton beasts).
Hoping it might stop raining so I can do the end links this weekend. |

Put the way too big axle stands and way too small jack to use and changed the end links. Also bought new spanners because I had a good excuse.
Suspension is about 80% quieter, but still a little 'agricultural'. Assuming this is normal but wouldn't mind going out in someone else's to check it out. Nearly swapped over steering limiters but ran out of weather so got the wheels on quick. |
