Faulty Clock spring/Steering Angle Sensor - Used or new?

Hi chaps

I've got a couple of error codes on my 2004 facelift V70 (which is putting the Anti-Skid service warning up):


BCM-0109 communication between control units ; Communicational problems with SAS, internal fault

SAS-000E
steering wheel angle sensor ; Internal fault


I gather this is the Clock Spring/Steering Angle sensor from my research, would that be the usual suspect for these codes?

I read that a software update for this can solve the issue as it widens the parameters. I'm a bit short of time to take it somewhere for this, plus i'm not sure I want to do it if it might not even work. When I erase the codes, they appear straight after turning the wheel, so I suspect it's too far gone. I hope to fix it myself at the weekend.

Anyone bought a new sensor and if so, how much was it? I don't have silly money to throw at the car, so might have to go secondhand. Or are secondhand ones pointless?

Lastly, are they the same sensors for all P2 V70/S60s?

Our V70 has the same steering angle sensor issue but we just live with it. It is not an MOT fail (or at least our local tester hasn't failed it on this).

Software update didn't solve it.

Thanks for that, i've a feeling that my MOT tester will fail it though, I thought a warning related to traction control would be a fail?

At the price they charge for new ones, I'd be willing to try installing and trying AT LEAST 3 used ones before finally caving. I got lucky on my first one at the wreckyard. It's not a hard job to install it so really not much lost in at least TRYING to save some $. One little twist, if you are going to a pick-your-own variety wreckyard be prepared to spend some time messing about if the clockspring you need is in a vehicle that does not have a key. The airbag can still be popped out (with difficulty) but you will likely need a crowbar to pull it right off as the locked steering wheel doesn't permit as good access to the holes at the back of the wheel for removal.

Thanks for the info, yes i've just seen how much they are new, they must be crazy! Scamming gits I think I prefer my 740, better than this useless technology loaded lump lol

Got issues with this myself on 2003 XC70 AWD.

BCM0109 and BCM0115 communications errors and SAS024 error.

Interested you say not an MOT fail....is this correct.

Our MOT is due in 3 weeks, and I could really do without the hassle of investigating this, swapping out units etc.

The previous owner had swapped the clock spring (with a second hand one) and seemed to make no difference, but I didnt have a VIDA/DICE to check when got it.

Any tips.....

It's a service message and you can make it go away on the screen so not relevant for MOT I reckon. If it were a permanent warning light then probably a problem.

I'm really not sure with this.

There is a permanent Amber (not red) light.
The service message can only be "losts" by toggling the display, but that is same for all messages in the display.

Actually wondering if I could take the LCD illumination lamps and backlights out....Lol, just as temporary thing to get through test and give me chance to sort it.

On our 2005 V70 there is no light, just the service message. It makes no difference to braking - may have some significance in extreme conditions but I stand to be corrected.

I think these don't go bad that often, not sure why they fail, but I wouldn't hesitate to try a used one. If installing yourself, careful with 'setting' the new one - really not difficult to set or replace, only difficulty is with some steering wheels which are awful to remove because the holes behind for the release mechanism are tiny and hard to release. But I believe your 2004 is one that is easy to release

It seems that all cars with DSTC will require a calibration of the DSTC unit after angle sensor replacement. "The contact reel/SAS replacement requires a calibration reset using VIDA. When it is replaced and this isn't done it will almost always set codes for lateral accel and yaw sensor correlation. The new SAS/contact reel can (and usually does) have a slightly different signal at straight ahead compared to the previous one it was last calibrated to. Effectively when its signal matches the last one's straight ahead signal the yaw and lat-accel sensors say you are cornering or when cornering according to SAS those say you are going straight. Calibration blanks those memory cells and the BCM the learns those as a set once you drive a short distance with some left and right directional change."
