S80: Engine 2.4 D vs D5

I'm due a replacement next year and due to the fact that the local dealership has gone corporate, I'll be moving to another marque. The Lexus RX400h (2nd hand of course) will more than likely get my business. We need an SUV and the XC90 D5 just cannot compete. I've been happy with the S80, we can afford the fuel bills, but it just doesn't suit our needs anymore. And as big executives go, the fuel consumption is nowhere near as good as the opposition. The Audi and BMW oil burners offer better performance and consumption. With the price of diesel, even a Lexus hybrid exec saloon offers better.

Volvo really need to sort their engines out.

A Lexus hybrid... you sure...? it's a bit golf club - plus if you crash badly the fire brigade are very reluctant to cut you out of an electric car apparently (electrocution anyone?) they don't tell you about that in the brochure!

I work within the emergency services and that is a myth. Whenever the CFB have to cut they disconnect batteries as a matter of course. Besides which they wear huge insulated gloves, wellies etc.

May be very golf clubby but is that a bad thing? I occasionally play golf, but I do a lot of cycling. An RX is good for all those activities. An XC90 will return significantly less mpg and comes with a lot less in terms of extras for your pound. The XC is also sluggish in performance and in dire need of a face lift. The only thing the XC has going for it is the better genuine off road capability (not that I do any) and large cabin and load areas.

We have had 3 S80's - the last two were both 163bhp variants. At the time of changing to the latest shape S80, our 2003 S80 D5 SE had done 120k and returned 44MPG, mainly doing motorway miles).

By comparison, our 57 reg 2.4d SE Lux Geartronic is averaging 39MPG. When I asked the dealership about the economy I was advised that 35MPG+ for the 2.4d and D5 185bhp was good. I tried the 2.4d and the D5 before buying and found the D5 had a noticeable flatspot below 2000 rpm (before the turbo kicked in).

Either car will suit motorway miles. The 2.4d is a little lower on tax and emissions. I have driven the 2.0d in a V50, but would stick with the 2.4d in the S80 - it sounds better and gives better real world performance for little penalty over the smaller engine.

I have a 2008 S80 D5 (185 HP) AWD Aut. averaging less than 28 Mpg combined, so reading the fuel economy in here makes me lift an eyebrow since it seems mine has a horrible fuel economy, could there be anything wrong with mine perhaps?

But that doesn't sound out of the realms of the reasonable.

The official figure for your vehicle is 36mpg. Official figures are basically complete fantasy - for our v70 it's 47, but we get 38.

Based on the official figure of 36, and your car more being 6 years old and not knowing what kind of journeys you do (if you're just around town then of course it will be low) nor your driving style (do you pin it to the floor, then brake hard at the last possible moment? Are you a pulse and glide hyper miler? Are you IAM using acceleration sense? ) it isn't possible to say exactly what you should get.

The d5 awd is rare in the s80, but the xc70 is a good analogue. A quick glance on fuelly shows a 2009 D5 xc70 returning 29, so you're in the expected sort of area for that drivetrain.

what is your average speed reading showing? Needs to be 40 + for best results

Now done close to 8K in the car since Sept last year, mainly sorter trips ie 5-7 miles one way on local sometimes hilly roads. The odd trip to Edinburgh (75 round trip) and average using an app on the phone is telling me 32.5mpg overall. I sometimes drive very gently but often do not hesitate to put my foot down, love the growl on this engine when it gets going. Just about to tow a medium sized trailer to France, 1800 miles return, wonder what mpg I'll get this time as last trip was in the Toyota. It should certainly be nice n comfy in the Volvo (subject to no breakdowns..).

Mpg has so many variables its difficult to pin a figure down.
When I picked up my second hand D4 xc70 fwd the on board computer reconed 54mpg on the motorway and 48 mpg average on the 300 mile trip home. Running locally that average has dropped to 44mpg. Not as economical as my phase1 was but acceptable for a big comfy car. Mine is the 175 bhp manual version. I am told that the polestar upgrade will improve the mpg figure, it is only 20 bhp more but massive torgue increase and as I tow to Scotland from west wales 2 or3 times a year the extra torque may come in handy, it is however a 10% loading on insurance.
