Default ODB 2 code reader

can anyone recommend a code reader that works on our cars? I have a code reader already (albeit a cheap one) but it won't read the codes. I don't want to order another one and find that doesn't work too

cheers

I have an Autel MS509 (?) that works well on my 1997 V70 T5, so I would have thought it would work on your '98 car.

However, I believe there are apps you can download to your phone, and buy a cable/dongle for it, which are probably better and cheaper. However I don't know much about these, others on here have much more knowledge and will hopefully advise. I do know that it needs to be an android phone though, not i-phone.

You may find some information here.

I can confirm that the kit listed works well with my 1998 V70 Tdi. However so far as I am aware it's only available for Android.

Might be a bit pricey for occasional use but how about VOL-FCR ? Download to laptop
You will also need to buy a connecting cable

I had the service light switched off with the FCR system by a helpful member:~
V70 2.5 Auto 1997.
He also demonstrated the features of the above on the car- seemed to work without any problems.

I just use the free Torque pro app with my iPhone and a bluetooth dongle.

It depends which type of codes you want to read. OBD2 is just for 'powertrain' (engine/gearbox) codes, not for things like ABS or body codes, etc.

Interesting. The 850OBD2 app will read ABS and SRS codes in addition to the engine and gearbox codes. It will also allow you to run tests of ABS solenoids and the pump. At least it will on my 1998 V70 Tdi. I haven't looked at any of the SRS stuff.

With regard to s1monc's comment, I'd be interested to know if he's running it on a pre 1999 car.
