engine system service required

Hi all

My 2009 V70 (D5 manual) has been back to the dealers twice now after the "engine system - service required" warning appeared. Most recently it happened two weeks ago and started randomly going into 'limp home' mode - very little engine power and then back to normal.

The dealers in Slough have been helpful enough and last time changed a sensor / loose wire but yesterday the warning came back, just a week after the issue was 'fixed'. I'm getting a bit tired of the recurring fault and wondered if anyone else had experienced this / found a solution?

I get the impression the dealership is a bit baffled by it too....

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem with a S80 D5 some time ago. It would unexpectedly go into limp home mode and display "engine system service urgent". If you stopped the engine then restarted immediately, everything was fine for a while.

The problem was traced to a blocked/contaminated fuel filter (one near the tank I recall) and the assumption was that I had filled up with some dirty diesel somewhere. The mechanic cut the filter in half and it looked like it was full of bitumen!

New filters fitted, and the problem went away!

Thanks for sharing your experiences. The car is booked into the dealers next week. Hopefully they will find something conclusive. It feels like sometimes they just reset the fault code and hope for the best.

What was the fault code indicating last time ? That's the path to follow !
was it to do with Oil level too high by any chance?

Hi all, quick update.
The car went into the dealers yesterday.

Apparently when the car went into the dealers a few weeks back there was an 'amber' warning against the 'exhaust gas temperature sensor'. Last time they cleaned the sensor but the fault re-appeared a few days later. On this occassion the fault was showing as 'red' so they have replaced the sensor.

I have only driven the car a few miles home so too early to have conclusive proof that the fault has gone, but the garage was confident that they have got it this time. Here's hoping they are right!

The saga continues. I was happily driving along the M4 at the weekend, about 1 hour into a 2 hour run to Bristol when the good old 'engine system - service required' warning light came back on again.

That was the first occassion since the exhaust gas temp sensor was replaced on Tuesday by the dealers. They (and I) had hoped that this would have cured the issue but alas not.

The car is going back in to the dealers again tomorrow for another look....

I had exactly the same problem on my S60 D5 SE last Tuesday, the independent Volvo guy I use was also a little baffled.

I looked through some of the information on the forums and someone had resolved the problem by topping up the Power steering fluid.

Mine was low and not registering on the dip, topped up and for the last 5 days it has been fine !!!

Worth a try?

Just took a call from the dealers. They advise the new issue is unrelated to the previous issue.

Apparently the V70 is very sensitive to engine oil level - the optimal level being about two-thirds full on the dip-stick, according to the dealers.

On my car the oil level was below the maximum level, but high enough to worry the car mangement system. So they have removed some enginge oil.
The interesting thing here is that the car was last serviced about April/May last year and hasn't been topped up since.

Apparently the oil level can also affect the DPF / particulate filter regeneration process although I'm not sure what connection there would be between oil level and the PDF.

Hopefully this will cure it now!
