Red face Looks like Turbo trouble...

Aftter giving our 2.4D XC90 hell up and down the Alps last week, it decided to have a protest. On the motorway home there was a "pop" noise after which there is now a loud rushing air noise and black smoke coming out of the exhaust when I put my foot down.

The car is currently being recovered by the German ADAC (who are excellent) but I just wanted to see what folks opitions are. Sounds like the turbo has failed to me. Any other ideas?

Sounds like you just blew off one the big pipes to/from the intercooler. Should be fixed in a matter of minutes....hopefully

That would be very nice indeed. I can understand how a loose pipe would lead to the noise and lack of power but would it also cause black smoke from the exhaust?

Yes it would. The black smoke is unburnt fuel and the engine would be running lean (ie lack of air) as the turbo is not providing.

When I blew my turbo on my Ford C-max it suck ALL the engine all out and there was LOADS of smoke out the back end and the engine revved uncontrollably until I had the foresight to stall it!!

Expensive.

Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks for all the comments. Sounds as though it might not be as dire as I thought. I will let you know how it turns out.

and the cause was.....

......one of the pipes from the turbo outlet to the intercooler had split. Sorted out very quickly with not much cost.

Part number was 30636856 amd cost 90 Euros.

So all in all not a disaster. However I do feel slighlty sorry for the ADAC recovery service who brought the XC and caravan back 500 miles to our local Volvo garage. Plus they gave us a Zafira for the week until we got it sorted. Superb service though, all for 95 Euros per year. Doubt I will have helped their bottom line this year...
