Yes I would but....
My history is a 240, in the late 80s from memory, 740 - what a limo!, 850 , another fab car, S60 in deep metallic red, super comfy but tight in the back, v70 which I kept about 13 years, and my current xc60 that I have had 7 years and will keep as its the 2.4 diesel.
I am absolutely in the market for a volvo right now, but as it would have to be petrol and 4 cylinder I am not confident in the engineering quality and longevity yet. They had some real issues in the teens.Fabulous cars, and great on a pcp, but if you are spending your own cash ? I would bet on mine for the next 5 years rather than a new xc40 or xc60.
If I had to buy a volvo right now, it would be a 2.4 diesel xc60 with as low mileage as possible, but look at the prices... and I already have one.
In 30 plus years of volvos, the only time I have been let down was when I left the radio on and flattened the battery, or a new battery has failed. I now carry a mini jump pack.
I have always tried to stick to volvo service schedule, which is sometimes difficult due to bad info from service at volvo dealers. I now travel a bit further to a good dealer.
I am watching and waiting rather than buying.
I have looked at other brands but I have a thing against Vw Audi group, and with other brands there is always something that says no. For example the hyundai tucson looks a good car until you realise the driver safety is " marginal " according to ncap.

If you want safety iin this age of texting, drinking and drugging while driving, volvo has to be on your list. But you cant have mine!

To me the question is, what do you buy now that is not over complicated and therefore likely to develop some fault or other ?

Currently I am strongly minded to hang onto my old Volvos for as long as possible. Yes they do go wrong occasionally but at 15, 18 and 22 years old surely that goes with the territory ?

Invariably they have been relatively minor faults although a £1000 bill for a DMF/clutch is looming on one, but at 220,000 + miles on the original I don't see that as a fault but as a wear and tear service item, taking into account negligible depreciation that's very acceptable to me.

I really do not know what I would replace them with either now or in the near or otherwise future, and am largely dreading when/if that time comes. Everything new or relatively new is so complex and the parts costs are exhorbitant, plus the manufacturers/dealers have got everyone by the b*lls with the reduced/non ability to diagnose and service yourself. I am of the mind that it's better the Devil you know.

I suppose that means, yes, I would buy another, carefully selected Volvo, but it would likely be a somewhat older model without all the, what I regard to be uneccessary fashion/status gadgets. All just more to go wrong, whatever the brand of car.

Unlikely.

I do high miles. Until electric really gives a proper range (400 miles in winter with the heating on), diesel is my best bet. They don't make them any more in the sensibly priced models - but the real clincher in the gearbox. Having researched these Geely self shifter automated dual clutch jobs, I'm not convinced they'll last the course - Geely have had several revisions on them as they have had a good number fail in China, who's to say the latest one won't also fail... and the Google system seems glitchy on some cars plus it's missing some basic functions.

Yes but I'm not excluding other vehicles either. Happy to stick with Volvo for our main family car tentatively and will be keeping our 2011 XC60 1st Gen for the foreseeable future (not yet sure how good the newer ones are and will probably wait until they are almost done depreciating before I find out. Even if I had a spare £40-£70k kicking about I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on a depreciating asset). Our 2nd car is a bit trickier. Currently I have a Ford Focus but realistically it does around 100 miles a month so isn't worth replacing until it dies and the repair bill is more than an equivalent replacement in good condition. The logical replacement would be either a V40 or V60 but I fancy building a camper/day van with a VW T5 Transporter or Ford Transit Custom (a used builders van as a base) . Shame Volvo don't do vans or I might have been tempted.

The one that impressed me most, apart from my current never to be sold 3.0 V60 Polestar was a hire car. Delayed flight to Brussels, no cars left but a 960, a 6 cylinder car , Lovely.

1st Volvo for me (V60 D4), very impressed. Previously had Fords, Vauxhalls, Hyundai, etc.. Would most likely go Volvo again.
In saying that... the wifey now has a Kia Cee'd GT Line, and that's very nice to drive !!

Don’t need to, I’ve already got one!

Seriously, the V60 will likely be with us for the next decade - it’s lovely.

Depending on the costs, might change the Polestar for an EX30 in ‘25.

I'm afraid not no. Parts are expensive and car tax is going through the roof its bloody ridiculous. Yes it's a nice place to be and there is a bit of get up and go when you need it. Dont believe in leasing as it's a waste of money, imho plus couldn't afford another one. Not sure what next car would be but probably not a Volvo.

Sadly no, after some 30 years of Volvo ownership. Why?
- I prefer estates and saloons and these are no longer available to UK buyers as of this summer.
- I don't like the Agency model for sales / lease.
- I don't like the lack of choice on options. You can either have flavour A or B, take it or leave it. For example, if you want one of the bits from flavour B, you have to pay for the whole lot (including a lot of stuff you don't want.
- I don't want a car where I can't turn off some features such as stop-start and auto-engine shut off on coast (latest V60 series). Not that I am against such things, but I prefer the control of deciding when to use them. For example, having the engine shut down every time I came up to a traffic light where I know it only takes a few seconds to change is super annoying (to me anyway!).

Sorry Volvo. A real shame...
