Volvo Weekender Roof Box - need help with it
Hello,
I created a thread on volvo roof boxes in the link below. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=214598 I thought of creating a new thread as I have purchased a Weekender box and need some input using this particular box. I purchased it from a used car dealer. They've been keeping this box for so long until they can't recall from what car it came from and they've lost the keys too! And they don't know what model it is but I'm pretty sure it's a Weekender. I've never used a box before so apologies for any daft questions The box came with these C shaped bracket and a frame with straps I proceeded to see how everything is assembled. The front part securing point. Is that the correct orientation? I see one end of the bracket has a C shaped hook or notch, what is that for and any particular direction it should be pointing to? There are holes which are covered, are these for the T-track bolts? On the other end of the box, the securing point is different. It has a track in the middle which can be moved. What are those grooved tracks at the sides for? Now I'm a bit puzzled with using this box with the aero bars. I thought T-bolts was advised but I could secure the box quite good to the bars using those C-clamps. Am I fine using these in terms of safety? The local dealer does not have the T-bolts adapter and it needs to be ordered (weeks). If I use the T-bolts, are the brackets with the straps still able to be used? Any one have any picture of the box with the T-bolts? Final thing, the rubber padding is supposed to go here? Sorry for the long post but I don't have anyone else here to ask advice from ... Thanks!

If you Google "volvo weekender roof box manual" you get this which appears to show installation instructions for the V70. It should give you some ideas. You can also play around with different combinations of accessory and vehicle.

Hello Aslan, the "C" shaped hook/notch is to mount the optional (on most Thule boxes) ski carrier, since your box is too small I assume Thule use the same "C" mountings on all their boxes of that vintage.
Hope it helps

Thanks truckbusUk and rich 1068! I'm beginning to get a better idea of this box and its parts.
Been spending time with Google. I think the more than needed holes on the base are to accommodate different mountings. Youtube showed adhesive covers similar on the box being used to cover the holes that are not used. The rubber pad is supposed to be inside the box and in between the bracket and the base of the box - to prevent moisture seeping in. Regarding the U-clamps I've found some people using it with the aero bars but I guess the T-bolts are more better looking and won't scratch the bars compared to the U clamps. I see Thule have these T-bolt adaptors too (most likely the Volvo ones are by Thule too). They have a few versions so I may need to bring my box to the local Thule for their advice. And I've gotten new keys for the box from our local Thule dealer! All that was needed was to read off the code of the lock. So far only thing I can't find is which is the equivalent Thule box for the Volvo Weekender. There is a Thule Weekender but it is different as it opens from the back.

When you do work it out you'll have to post up some pictures. If I do end up getting a roof box the Weekender is on the list.

Sorted out - almost
I had underestimated the size of the weekender. It's a huge box! Good thing I didn't get the Thule Dynamic or Volvo Space Design which is bigger.
Here are some pictures. The box is positioned at the rearmost with enough clearance for the tailgate. The aero bars. I used the U-clamps supplied. It was fiddly putting it on trying to adjust the bars so it's sit in between the clamps hole. Removing the clamps was easy. Maybe using the T-bolt adaptors would make putting the box and off easier. Only problem now is I find the box quite high to comfortably open it and to haul in and out luggage. I'm thinking of finding a small collapsible stool or ladder.

I have my roof boxed fastened in exactly the same way that yours is.
The straps I use inside the box to tie down stuff. I can stand on the side bars, or the rear wheel itself, to access the box. |
