Default wires under engine cover

You might recall my rough running/VVT issue

I've been looking at the plugs/coils etc and spotted what looks like a wiring repair under the engine cover, that is the oil filler cap to the left. I assume this is not how it left the factory when new?

Perhaps the wires were crushed when fitting the engine cover. But there are 4 wires coming in from the right but only two wires coming in from the left.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Those red wires don't look like Volvo wires.
Where do they come from / goto?

yes that's normal . the red wires are the live feeds to the coils and joined to one input red wire and the sleeves have glue in them which melts and keeps the water out . what is missing is the ribbed slit black plastic covering which gets brittle .

The slitted cover is called convoluted tubing and can easily be bought from ebay.
Easy to use and makes a tidier job
