Default Play on detachable towball - 2016 xc60

I have a late 2016 XC60 fitted with the volvo detachable towbar. There is a noticeable amount of up/down play developing and a little from side to side.
The lock is useless, and I have been advised by a towbar specialist that it should not be used.
I have noticed similar play on other bars of similar design and would appreciate some advice.
How much play, if any, is acceptable and can the affected parts be replaced or is it a complete new bar? Has anyone experience with bars other than OEM?

I use the vehicle mainly for towing a 1600 kg caravan in the UK

I had a similar concern with my towbar about 5 years ago and was able to seek advice from a Thule towbar dealer in Lincoln.

He advised that the play was within tolerance and was OK to use.

I have since upgraded the van to a 2000kg Swift Elegance Grande, with no problems with the towbar and the play has not increased significantly.

If it locks in solidly then you should not have a problem.
