Unhappy XC60 AWD Rumble

2014 XC60 D5 AWD, I am getting a rumble / vibration through the seats when setting off & accelerating, its not audible and not all the time. Its been in the local garage but they cant find anything, the roads at the moment don't help diagnose the issue. It not continuous so shouldn't be tyres etc. Any one had something similar?

My XC70 has the Haldex rumble upon first driving when the oil is cold or if the car is being turned on hard lock, in fact when I first bought the vehicle the sensation was not there but that was because the Haldex pump was faulty. Since replacement it happens at the beginning of each cold start journey indicating that the system is working.

If what you feel is a rumble/judder through the seat base then I suspect it is nothing untoward and is just the Haldex clutch activating.

I find that by the time the engine temp is travelling above halfway that the sensation disappears.

It is well documented on many a forum for cars running the Haldex system such as vehicles in the VAG, Ford, Jaguar and many many others.

Thank you, this makes sense, I will keep an eye on the temperature to see if it is happening depending on temp, and get it booked in for a bit more investigation.

I have had a similar rumble on accelerating from low speeds only and it turned out to be the tyres. A front to back swap changed the rumbles characteristics, it started earlier but lasted longer, after a while it disappeared completely as the tyres changed shape.

It does not mean that it is the solution to your problems but it is a cheap thing to try.

So after some testing I removed the fuse for the AWD system and the fault disappeared, went back to the garage and they suggested rotating the tyres, front to back. I did this Saturday and so far it seams to of fixed the issue.

The tyres that were on the back were different wear as one got a screw just in the wall, this resulted in a tread difference of about 2mm.

So now is the debate do I replace the tyres that are now on the front to make the a matching pair, and it could be expensive if I get another flat in the future.

Personally I would leave it as is for a couple of thousand miles to get a new wear pattern on both pairs and then swap them if you need to so that the pair with the most wear are on the front. Remember to take it easy if the pair with the less tread are on the back.
