Its an earthing point, if you jump start the car using jump leads you put the possitive lead clamp on the battery possive post then the negative lead clamp on that stud.
This avoids possible sparks near the battery. When removing remove the earth lead first. |

Earthing point for jump starts! Makes perfect sense. And of course because it’s a Volvo it’s the one bit of kit that will very probably never be needed, that’s why it wasn’t readily recognised!

This sounds a nice idea but I’m sure the manual for the 960/V90 tells you to attach the earth lead “to a stationary solid metal part on the engine at a point away from the battery” when starting using an auxiliary battery. I can’t see that it would say that in the manual if Volvo had provided a special binding post for the purpose.
