Getting back into Volvo ownership - recomendations?
Hi all
Long time since I have been here, but I remembered the password to log in!! I used to own an M reg 850 estate, an immaculate V70 estate and a 740 - I had a long love affair with Volvo but once kids came along we had to tighten our belts and sell off the collection. I have since had a vast array of cars and currently have defender tdi and a mk1 Mx5 - However I miss the all purpose nature of the Volvo and am interested in buying another for a daily driver and long distance mile muncher. I like the old boxy Volvo's and knew my way around the old 850s and V70s but I really wouldnt know where to start now when looking at a newer car. So, if I had 5k (ish) to spend on a good well looked after car what would you guys recommend? A well looked after 940 or a new car and if newer what one?? Look forward to hearing your views, are the curvy V70s as good as the old ones... i seem to remember Ford getting involved? Many thanks James |

P2 V70s are as reliable as the P80 series, only real negative is the p2 chassis has a turning circle roughly equivalent to the diameter of the moon.
But for £5k you can grab a P3 V70, if you wanted. Or buy a £1.5k 850/V70 and have the rest for repairs - if you know you liked them and know your way around them why not?

I had a similar budget and picked up my first Volvo, a P3 2009 V70 , for 5.6K, it had been reduced from £6.5K, no takers. I've noticed it's a good time to buy at the moment, this one has 96K on the clock and is in mint condition, every single thing working on it. I'm very pleased with it, apart from the fact it had just had an oil change and had been overfilled, so I had to get that sorted. There are some good bargains about at the moment so I'd definitely look for a P3 V70, been very impressed with it so far. If you do then make sure you check everything electrical, it's worth spending 15 minutes doing it.

I would suggest rescuing this.
https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-VOLVO-...volvo+940.TRS0 Knock a hundred or so off the price and then you have 4k for repairs and then a super reliable luxury barge and better build quality than the Ford era Volvos and it is a simpler car so easier to fix. |
