What do you think of this 07 S80 D5 sale? Looks smart in photos
but not sure if it’s good value/bit expensive with that mileage? Not sure of the longevity/reliability/running costs/repair bills at that age/mileage? I know the diesel Volvos should be able to do mega miles 250k plus easily but am not familiar with this generation.

You need to look at it in person, check the service history thoroughly (and ownership history), then take it for a test drive and go by your gut feeling.

With a proper service history 150k miles isn't an issue.

With any car, when you get under £5k and 10 years old or more, then you are always going to be making an informed gamble.

If you don't know this gen of car, then take someone with you who does.

Recently found a 2004 V70 D5 for my brother. 140k miles, bit tatty and scruffy in the pictures. Turns out it was being sold privately under probate, so no-one was too fussed about spending time tidying it up. We saw through the grubbiness, saw it was only on its second owner (old boy pottering about) and its first owner from new was a company director. Drove well. We got it for £1,000.

Got it back and it needed rear calipers (replaced with used ones) and pads (£20). A good wash/Vax and it's a tidy motor.

Personally I'd never buy a sub 5k car from a dealer.

Well it’s just with private sales have limited comeback compared to a dealer. Could be easy for private seller to hide a fault by resetting a warning that may not show up again for some miles. Or fault with auto box may not be noticeable at first.

Seriously?

The seller most likely to hide something from you is a dealer!

You sound like the perfect customer!

Yes but you have a legal comeback with a dealer, with a private sale it will be tough luck.

It's a question of choice, and appetite for risk. I'd rather buy a car I feel is good from a private seller, for less outlay, than a car from a dealer, who doesn't really know the car, for a premium, where the risk is taken by an insurance payment.

You can still make a claim against a private seller if they miss sell the item. If for an example the advert says very reliable or the likes and it goes pop on the way home just get the tow truck to return it. Or if is states full service history and it doesn’t he has miss sold it. You just need to dig a bit deeper to make sure it is right and that you are happy with the condition. If your unsure get an inspection done. You could always buy an insurance backed warranty if you want piece of mind.
As for a dealer, the sort of dealer that is likely to be selling a sub 5 grand car, they will know all the tricks and be the most likely to use them.
If buying from a dealer pay at least £100 deposit on a credit card as this makes the card company jointly responsible for the car being right under what is commonly called section 75. If the dealer doesn’t take credit cards walk away. Again if your not sure get it inspected.

I paid over the odds for my S80, it was from a dealer but had full Volvo history with all software updates, matching Michelin tyres etc.

At the end of the day you pay what you think is fair if you like the car and it feels right.

Looks like its been for sale for a while as the MOT ran out in June, go in with a low price.

I have a 2007 S80. Had it now for 5 years and have no desire to change. It has only just broken 80K and it has the 185 engine which I think is what the car you are looking at will have. Mine doesn't have the sun roof.
Not sure what mine would be worth, hopefully more than your one. Price seems reasonable. Don't think you will go wrong.
