OK, tried again tonight, same result.....The bottom of the radiator and the bottom hose are stone cold, and thats after 20 mins fast idle and a run around the block......
Water flows out of the drain ****...I'm wondering if there is a blockage somewhere in the bottom of ther rad, seems like no water is circulating. I dumped the thermostat in boiling water, it opened up fine. I'm flummuxed, because with an open thermostat, it runs cool.....never getting above the middle point on the gauge. Any thoughts? Cheers Gerry

I think I would remove the radiator and try back flushing it.

OK, had the rad out, back flushed, flows freely, same on the engine block, what goes in comes back out in real time.....
Popped in the stat, very carefully filled it, "burped" the top hose........No result, temp still rises, rad does not get hot at bottom. Spoke with an old mate who used to be in the rad business, descibed the problem...he imediatly diagnosed a blocked rad. He says the flow test with a garden hose will always give a good result....you need a proper test rig for testing flow.... So, off now to find out the cost of a rebuild.... Cheers Gerry

New sounds better, but I got a new Volvo 740 alloy one for £70 minus the unmentionable so might be worth more shopping around, unless there's a Choice of One : )

Whit ! £70...
and I thought £127 was not too bad......Supply and demand I suppose..Going to take it for testing tomorrow just to make sure. Its a family firm, 70 yrs on the same site, the only one who didn't say, "a Volvo whatazon??", when I called...In fact he's doing a 144 rad today.....
