if you take the A pillar cover off next to the windscreen & door frame you will see a tube ,it takes water away from the sunroof gutter out through the firewall , the tube will be blocked from silt , disconnect from the sunroof gutter and blow , this may clear it if not a long piece of wire down it , or you could pull the pipe out from the firewall but make sure you replace it properly or water will drain straight into the back of your dash, once done make it a regular job ,, hope this helps mate & sorts you out

It is an old thread, but I had the same issue with water in the drivers side bay.

So after fault finding I made some pictures. And it was one of the sunroof drain that was blocked.

Default Volvo S40 2.0lt 2009

Hi,

Just posting this as it may help someone. I have an S40, 2.0lt diesel, 2009, 166k miles, no sunroof with the original windscreen.

The issue was that water was seeping in through the side of the driver's side wing, right at the bottom of the windscreen. This water would then trickle down behind the steering wheel, go beneath the soundproofing, and accumulate under the carpet until it eventually seeped through the mats in the driver's footwell.

I used a wire coat hanger shaped into a hook at the end to scrap our all the debris. This fixed the problem. I've included some pictures

The last image shows a close up of the area to clean out.

Hope that helps.
