Ether & easystart & similar have been around ever since diesels had flame start systems fitted . Yes they can start a temperamental diesel ,bu the engine becomes addicted to the ether & will not start without a snort of the damn stuff . There is a large volume of technical data available online regarding the damaging effect ether has on compression ignition engines . The loud cracking sound of a diesel starting with ether is pre ignition / detenation of the vapour & occurs as the piston is still on its compression stroke , way before top dead centre has been reached . Modern engines with all their whizzo sensors & filters are simply asking for more trouble from the use of ether based starting fluids.
And certainly DO NOT tow the car & attempt to start it that way , also heading for the pit of disaster with the method . A quick check , aska locksmith to read rifd chip in key & make sure it can be read or simply try your spare key

Also meant to say that a diesel will fire on ether with no fuel , the immobiliser active , but the starter turning until all the ether vapour has been consumed adn then you are no wiser , as it started but then stopped .
Once started a very old Gardner 6xlb without any injection pump fitted , it would clatter along until the ether stopped , just to prove a point to a disbeliever
