Auxiliary Drive Belt, Tensioner & Idler
I have a 2010 D5 (205), which a month or so ago had a diesel leak from one of the injector return pipe following a leakback test. As a result significant quantities of diesel accumulated on the top of the engine before running down the side of the engine over the timing belt and auxiliary drive belt.
A couple of weeks after sorting the leak and cleaning everything off, the auxiliary drive belt decided to disintegrate. Thankfully, when the belt went goodbye it never did any damage to the timing belt. The belt was replaced and all seemed fine but now I have the decided squeaking coming from the engine every time it starts up and this continues for a good long while at an audible level in the cabin before it dies down. The noise is still there but only audible from outside the cabin or with the window open. I'm pretty sure that this noise is either from the Aux Drive Belt Tensioner or Idler, and having read the horror stories about Idlers failing and taking the timing belt with them when they go I am going to be replacing the tensioner and idler. I went to the local motor factors and was promptly told that I can have the Tensioner, but the idler is a Volvo only part. I had initially asked for a complete kit of belt, tensioner and idler but was told that the kit was not suitable for my car, as the only kit that was coming up was for later chassis numbers. So eventually to the two questions..... Is the kit for the 215bhp D5 from 2011, suitable for the 2009-10 205bhp? and Anyone know of any suppliers of the Aux Drive belt idler other than from a main stealer? |

What's your car model and what is the D5 engine code?
The code should be printed on the timing cover.

I think the part is number 5 on there.... but will need to get back under the car this evening.
what would be hugely helpful if you had the same diagram for the D5244T11 as a comparison, as I think the motor factor is just trying to cover their back as the kit they have isn't specifically mentioning the D5244T10 |

And so the saga continues....... replaced the auxiliary belt and the squeaking has stopped. It appears that the belt that was originally supplied as an urgent replacement was not the correct length (too short by about 6mm) and this was causing the squeaking noise.
I also took the time to check the alternator with the belt off, and it turned freely both ways, but with a screwdriver in the fins it only turned one way, so all seemed fine. Until the "Charging Failure - Urgent service required" message appeared on the dashboard. It happened the day of the belt change but lasted only a couple of seconds... but today it came on and has not gone off again..... The belt and alternator were both turning with the engine running so I'm assuming that it is terminal and something in the alternator is kaput |

Click on the link in my signature for alternator testing videos.
You can then at least narrow it down and decide whether to repair or replace.

Thanks,
I have tested the alternator using the tests you suggested and they all seemed fine. The connections are clean as a whistle so no issues there The only one that seemed strange was the voltage check which came in at around 17.5 volts from the alternator, but I also checked my dad's D5 and it was also throwing out 17 volts... so I am guessing perhaps the multimeter is a bit out of whack for some things. The error message has since disappeared since i started the car yesterday to run the tests, and has not come back on since. It has occurred to me that the error message has only come on twice since replacing the belt and both times when i was either going into or coming out of a particularly tight parking space necessitating full lock. Part of me thinks that it could be belt slip when the aux drive belt is under full load with the steering pump etc. No replacement of the alternator in order yet. But if one is needed i've already been told there are 2 variants in amp capacity - 150 amps or 180 amps and I need a part number to identify the alternator.....where does this hide as I can't seem to find any identifying marks/stickers on the alternator at all. |
