Default Variable camshalf values hubs

Hello

I own a 2005 s60 turbo 2 ltr petrol

Just passed the mot great I thought
Then yesterday the engine light came on
So took it to my mechanic and he has diagnosed the
problem to the variable camshaft values hubs inlet and exhaust

Just had a quote from Volvo who want nearly £500 for the two
parts

Can anyone recommend any aftermarket parts

Thanks kindly Tony

Hello

Thanks for the reply I'm now turning grey very quickly

I'm not a mechanic so please bare with me

The saga

I took the car to my dads mechanic who change the timing belt ,engine oil
about one week ago

The the engine light came on yesterday so I took it to my mechanic
who found a fault on his laptop which came up faulty camshalf sensor exhaust side

This was replaced but made no difference

So he checked the timing belt and said who ever put the timing belt on
has not set the timing correct he reckons the timing is out causing
The engine fault light to come on and there is so much free play it was lucky how the values have not hit the pistons

He said he has tried to advance the ???? hub but it comes back

Sorry for being vague

Thanks kindly Tony

He has really messed up the cam timing now , Did he use the volvo tools to ensure the timing is spot on ? also there is a method for fitting the variable pulleys . I think he messed it up when he did the cambelt by getting it a tooth or so out , then once the pulley was removed ( he incorrectly thought it was faulty ) he has no hope of getting it right without a lengthy process and correct tools to time the camshafts . Take it to a volvo dealer to sort out and send him the bill and add on the bit for a new pulley !

Thanks for the reply
There were two different garages here

my dads mechanic who fitted the timing belt in the first place has fitted it wrong one or two teeth out? As you say

And my mechanic who has now check it who has said I need a new inlet and exhaust hub because it comes back ???

Does that sound correct ?

Thanks Tony

ahh right , that complicates things , You should have taken it back to the first garage then they would have re done the belt fitting . You do not need timing tools unless you take off a cam pulley .

The second garage knew about the recent belt change i guess so they should have double checked the belt was on the right teeth .

You never need two pulleys , it is rare enough for one to fail never mind two at the same time ! Best take it to the volvo dealer , explain the story and let them sort it out ...

The words "there is so much free play it was lucky how the values have not hit the pistons " show that he has no idea how they work.

Thanks

Just been to see the car

Belt is off mechanic has just showed me the excess play in the hubs when you pull them back and forth

He has the locking tool on the cams

He also said they move too far ? Clockwise / anticlockwise which he hasn't seen
before?

Are they adjustable to reduced movement

Just trying to learn a bit more

Ps does anyone know if the hub are compatibile with any other car makes
I seem to be struggling on buying the hubs for less than £500

Thanks Tony

There is more in/out movement in the pulley when there is no oil pressure. As you can see it moves a lot radially too.
