Can you still buy new rear light clusters for an 850 saloon?
My N/S/R light cluster has a crack in it but all the pattern ones I see for sale don’t have the smoked indicator lens and the grey band around the outside. With my Volvo dealer being shut I can’t find out if they still sell them. I’ve checked the usual places like PFS and Scandix but they say item discontinued.
Are the T-5R and R clusters different? Or do they all have the grey band around the edge and smoked indicator? The crack in the cluster isn’t letting in any water so isn’t urgent. Are there any Volvo breakers in the UK? Maybe my best bet. Thanks. |

I'd doubt that new 850 light clusters are still available from Volvo, but one source that I've found to be consistently good for second-hand spares for our 1998 S70 and 1997 S90 is Dumfries Volvo Spares. They trade on Ebay as "awesometwosome".

Rear light clusters.
I recently bought a pair of complete clusters with bulb holders & bulbs for £50 plus p&p for my 1995 850 not a T5. From LB Volvo Spares in Shifnal Shrops, contact Lee Byrne 07759 415420. They posted them to me They were from a later V70 and have clear indicator lenses, but are supplied with amber light bulbs. They have a coloured band around the bottom, that matches the colour of the car, so you will need to specify, as I didn't, my car is red and I got a blue band . I haven't checked whether it is possible to interchange that section. They have smartened my car up a lot, as the original ones looked like they had been sand-blasted & upset the MOT man. I can thoroughly recommend them if you are not too precious about originality. Incidentally I have a 1996 T5 and the covers are exactly the same as my 1995 non-T5.

Mine is a saloon so a little harder to find the rear lights. The bands around the outside are all grey on the saloon R models I’ve seen and have slightly tinted smoked indicator lenses. I’ll just look out for used ones that come up or try one of the breakers. |

If you're in Kent try to track down a guy by the name of Tim Denzey. He certainly used to break Volvos, and was based around Maidstone. He supplied a replacement wing for our S70 - in perfect condition and in the right colour.

V70 t5 1999

It cost over £30,000 when new and I paid £1,800 for it when it was 13 years old. A replacement V90 is £45,000 and will lose half its value in a mere three or four years at a staggering £5,000 p.a. plus service and repair costs of probably another £1,000 p.a... All in all driving an old car is so much cheaper and the level of comfort and spec is pretty much the same as a new car. |

Reminds me of a conversation I had with Steves a few months ago re a neighbour who chopped in a perfectly decent 2.5 98 V70 for a soanking new V90 on the basis " the oldgirl was starting to cost me money "
The conversation started with me saying how sad it is we live in a society where a grown man has to press a button to lift his taiogate. His response was not as sad as the £4K bill he will get in a few years time when the tailgate mech fails |
