Why defend Volvo on this matter? Why defend any car manufacturer? £500 is a lot of money for a cheap piece of electronics - a laptop can be bought for £300 and is far superior in power and complexity.

Things like this especially the costs put me off Volvo but when I think back to the safety of volvo I cant bare to think of driving anything else,The thread from Monkeymatt is enough to convince me stick to Volvo,Myself and my kids having survived something similar not to long ago.

Hermo I think you would have good grounds to reject the car. Seven weeks is a pitiful amount of time for them to give up any responsibility, warranty or not.

Perhaps a trip to the small claims court may convince them otherwise? It would cost them more than that to represent themselves.

If all else fails it is a simple resolder of the main chip, mine still going 'strong' since I redid mine.

Point taken Clan, but the laptop has got cheaper with time - the technology to produce it has become cheaper so surely the DIM is now cheaper to produce or you could even redesign it and produce it for less - do they replace the whole head unit or just the PCB?

They need only change the PCB, the rest of it is fine.

Mine failed a while ago (V70 D5 160K.). I followed a very good post on this forum to solder it up. It lasted a fortnight. I then soldered it up again, this time it lasted about a month. Eack time It comes back to life it does not increment the mileage, it carries on from where it left off. As all the indicators work and I use my sat nav for speed, I am not too worried about it. Until tonight that is when, on the way home it went into "disco mode". All the warning lights lit randomly in time to road noise. When I envually got home and took the ignition key out, it still did not stop. It is now on the table awaiting it's next assault from the soldering iron. I am not going to pay £850 for a new one from a stealer.

That's what the local dealer quoted me. It included VAT, fitting and clearing the fault codes. Thanks to this forum, I know better now.
As BBA-Reman are very near to where I work, I will probably take it in there. I just want to check out some of the wiring first. Thanks anyway.

I resoldered mine, the info display still works but the handbrake warning is a bit erratic.

I will resolder it again at the weekend, I think part of the problem is that I forgot to reseal the PCB after it came out and I'd suspect the condensation from the cold winter mornings has got to it.

In fairness it has worked fine for the past five months or so since I did it.
