I've been collecting tools for decades. With funds permitting I've always opted to buy big things like the hydraulic press telling myself that this time it is just like paying someone to do the job for me - next time it'll be free.

Bite the bullet - keep the ball rolling and before you know it you'll have to rent a workshop space too!

Hi, re' chassis number. Are you sure that the number stamped above the heater box is the chassis number? I have a number stamped into the bulkhead in the same position as you indicate but it's not the chassis number or any part of it. check again.

On my car (1961) the number is the same as on the ID tag and all of the paperwork. There seems to be a fair amount of confusion regarding when Volvo started to do this (actually stamping into a place on the chassis) - you've got an earlier car haven't you?

If you use the chassis information that you have stamped into the chassis what do you get when you compare this to the expected data published say in the front of the parts book?

Ah you're pre August 1961 - the last of the 6V vehicles

Mine must be towards the end of the year: Special model type => 11134C

My number could be 11234B. Still don't really know what it indicates. Certainly not vin number. Any thoughts on this Derek?

According to this Dutch PV club site =>

https://katterugclub.nl/volvo-pv-544

11234B indicates model type

Which is (as listed on that site in Dutch) the top of the range Sport model

It had 6V electrics

B16B (85 SAE-pk) engine

M40 four speed gearbox - all synchromesh

Chassis Number fun!

My chassis # is 137181, but it also has P-44408-1957 on the plate, and I think the 08 signifies a car destined for California. 6 Volt system. Transmission plate marked M4. The car has 4 gears but is not syncro-mesh in first. Supposedly the car might have started life with a 3 speed transmission, so my transmission is currently a puzzle.

Back to the Dutch site (I'll translate)

https://katterugclub.nl/volvo-pv-444

P-44408 is a "special" (higher spec) car for the US of A (so I assume not necessarily California but the whole country)

The chassis number falls within the "B" specification

That had an asymetrical dashboard with a new steering wheel
Three part chrome bumpers - some sort of sticking out bits on the bumpers (I'm not quite sure how to translate that bit!) and a bulging bit on the rear bumper that sticks out over the licence plate light
Indicators - traficators? - on the roof of the vehicle
