Post V90 Start/Stop Service Required - warning light

Hey all!

I have a 2017 Volvo V90 and like many others, thge car hasn't been getting used a great deal over the last ~6 months. A few months back I found that the car wouldn't unlock with either of the electronic keys - I eventually got in with the mechanical key before finding that the batteries in both the keys were flat and needed replacing.

Ever since then the "start/stop service required" warning has been coming up on the dash. As the car hasn't been getting used much I guessed it was something to do with the battery. I've charged the main battery until full and this seems to get rid of the warning light for one or two journeys before it comes back again. I took the car to the local garage and they tested the battery and said it was in good condition.

Has anyone come across this issue before and give a fix for it? Can't work out if the key batteries going flat has anything to do with it or if that's just a coincidence.

Thanks in advance!

Kevin

From the V90 manual:
Cars with the Start/Stop function are equipped with two 12 V batteries - one extra powerful starter battery for starting and one support battery that helps during the Start/Stop function's starting sequence.

You may well have charged up the starter battery but the support battery might not have sufficient charge.

Volvo issued a bulletin about this ,
It says that the battery must be charged every TWO weeks whilst not being used ...

In your case the battery has sulphated so needs recovering as a first step .
They say to charge the battery with a 10A or more charger for FORTY EIGHT hours minimum ... And you need a simple charger that will not turn itself off after a short period ...

you should be ok then but charge it every 2 weeks overnight to keep it fresh if the car is seldom used.

The support battery has nothing whatsoever to do with it ... Its always fully charged ... It has an easy life ...

Did you use the charging points in the engine bay or did you connect directly to the battery in the boot?

I ask as if you connected directly to the battery in the boot you won't have charged the Support Battery.

The correct charging points are shown in the manual:

So, the support battery is not actually used for stop/start and the manual is incorrect?
Confused now...

Confused now...
The small support battery keeps the cars electrics going whilst the engine is stopped , the main battery restarts the engine ...
The support battery is being charged all the time the engine is running ..

Thanks all. Was it bulletin:

TJ34241.2.1-2020: "12V battery message, Start/Stop unavailable, DTCs CEM-B129F96, CEM-B10A613"
If so, it seems similar but doesn't mention the specific "Start/Stop Service Required" message I seem to be getting.

I'll try putting it on charge for 48H.

By the way, I totally agree that the manual is misleading. It says something like "Cars which have the start/stop system are equipped with two batteries - the main battery and an auxilliary battery", and that implies that the second battery is used for the start/stop system, but it seems that that's not the case.

No its a volvo UK bulletin to their dealers rather than from HQ in Sweden .. More to help when storing the cars for any length of time . Which is what a lot of us are doing this year .
