Pass on the 850 thanks!
OK, so clutch for the engine, throw out arm and bearing for the box. Cross member the same. Bearing fine. Solid. One last question if you will bear with me, do I get the whole prop shaft or just the front section?

Get the whole thing if possible.
They are balanced though I have mixed them about without noticeable problems. If you need to mix and match, keep the UJs in line as per the original. Check the centre spline is free- they are plastic coated and seize sometimes. Check the UJs as they can give judders under braking. All from Volvo Props Anoraks are us. James. |

No, there are two different sizes. Earlier shafts are smaller in section, later ones are much chunkier and have a larger centre bearing.
The two halves won't mix, because the splines are different sizes too. But it doesn't matter if you get the whole prop. You need whatever was on the car the gearbox came from. |

OK, the conversion is complete, so I thought I would post a few observations to any who might be considering the swap.
First off, the car drives fine, no changes 1st through 4th, it will cruise in 5th very nicely from 55. It's a K, so results may vary! Secondly, you will need to move the rear engine mount back, but the holes are there and it presents no problems. You don't need a different type of mount. Third, if you can find out what the new box came off, do so. Mine came from a 740 and the stick carrier and link rod were far too long. I searched in vain for anyone willing to take these components off a 240 box, but understandably no-one wanted to do so. I ended up having to cut and weld the ones that came off the old M45, requiring the construction of a measuring jig. Very time consuming. Check first folks! The bellhousing on the 740 box lacked a CPS cut out, but this is an easy job so don't concern yourself over it. I did this job with the front of the car up on ramps. This makes things like taking the prop off the diff a right squeeze, if you can get a 2 pillar lift or a pit then do so, it will take hours off the job time. By far and away the hardest part of the whole exercise was getting the new box onto the back of the engine. I tied the gearstick carrier to a rope up through the gearstick hole, lifted the back of the box and secured, then lifted the front of the box on bench press style. There wasn't room for another bod under the car, so plan for this. The box is a damn sight heavier when you are under there than when you are lifting it about the garage! If you are looking for a clutch and are worried about the many variations found on eBay and whether it will fit your engine / box combo, just go to Brookhouse and they will sort you. Their kits are Sachs, which is what the OE plate was that came out of mine. Buy an OE throw out bearing though, the one I got looked a bit dodgy on the connections to the arm. "Old and busted" and "New shinyness" pics attached. Thanks to all who chipped in at the start of the thread and helped me get this right. Cap.

I have a M047 from a diesel which I intend using for swapping an existing M45.
Both have the 22 splined pre-shaft. bellhouse can be swapped. The drive for the instrument is in this M47. Guess I only need to find the propshaft from a late 240? Last edited by skidje; Aug 28th, 2023 at 14:19. |
