Jack the car up and have a look. It might be ok with a £2.99 bandage. No point in buying a new exhaust if you can patch it up for another year!

This is my thinking. I'm sure some metal tape, gum gum or similar will get it through. I lack the facilities so would have to use a set of ramps, but with my back, it's just lying on the cold damp road that doesn't appeal !

Just received a message from an e-bay seller - £106 for the mid section and £15 for the tail pipe...£141 all in...
Best price I've been given for supply and fit is £276 for an aftermarket. It's only £349 for a genuine part from Marshalls in WGC ! Might just pop down to halfords in the morning

Well I had a result on the repair... A plate was fabricated and welded by the garage, and the centre joint tightened up and puttied up - all for £35 ! It was also a lot better than any repair I could do.
Looking back on the service reports and receipts, I purchased the car in 2007 – In 2008 I had the same rear section and tail pipe fitted for £180. In 2015 I needed to have that exhaust section was replaced again - £185, so it lasted 7 years and only cost £5 more. The one fitted in 2015 has lasted five years (and covered less mileage) and at over £300 almost doubled in price ! Looking back at the MOT mileage, the first exhaust covered just over 32,000 miles. The one fitted in 2015 has covered 22,500. The guy who repaired it said the rest of the section is in good shape, so hopefully will last me another 10,000 miles, which seeing that in the past 12 months I’ve only clocked up around 2800 miles means it won’t need replacing for another three and a half years At least now if the car fails the MOT it shouldn't be down to the exhaust.

Pre check
Well that was an interesting afternoon...
Having fitted a replacement coil module https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...74#post2692574 I then proceeded with the usual pre MOT checks, making sure the wipers are good, horn works and all the lights are functional. I found that the NS rear fog wasn't coming on, so having pulled the panel off (and breaking a clip or two !) checked the bulb - both filaments were fine and so it was out with the haynes manual to check the diagram Seems there is one wire coming in to the connector, and then another runs out to the other fog lamp, and as this connector had two violet wires it would suggest this is the main feed, and as the other fog was OK, then the problem was with the cluster housing. I removed the housing and took it indoors. What a maze of metal segments pressed against each other to route the connections ! - Tracing out the connections it seemed one of the metal segments was missing, so armed with a a large insulated paperclip I managed to bridge the connection and get the light working... Well tomorrow is the day of reckoning... The centre I use is open 8:30 to 12:30 so by this time tomorrow I'll know if she has passed or failed

As above, that's normal, and it would have passed. You've just discovered the modification to get them both working, so well done!
I did mine too - why not? Cheers!

Well..... It passed. Phew, so relieved.
Same minor defect (a small chip in the screen that doesn't affect the view) and advisories. What was a shock was one guy brought in a five year old Focus which failed with quite a list of things.... He was somewhat stunned when he heard my (now) 22 year old V70 had past with just a couple of advisories !! - Just goes to show Volvo made these things to last !
