Paul a uk: yes, Ingleside/Sussex Volvo Spares have now closed down (the buildings now have new non-Volvo specialist proprietors): I know as often stay with friends nearly opposite. Since then I've used Charlwood Restorations near Gatwick Airport, as from bitter experience have found places such as fuel-injection specialists haven't got a clue if one can't plug the car into their computers.
Graham from SVS can do some work from home (in Lancing) and has always liked 240s: seeing that's your area I could ask him if interested. Send me a PM or give me your email address for reply.

No they didnt have to adjust anything, dam tank just seems to soldier on every year -- the last 4 MOT's have been straight through.

Some advisories such as bushes and headlights faded - had planned to replace the reflectors if it passed this year. Settle for getting it running first

I have just tried to send you a PM but I dont have 30 post yet

Hi,

Thank you for the quick reply re: Ingleside/Sussex Volvo Spares.

That's truly a shame as he was fantastic for advice and parts. However can't blame him as we all work to get us to retirement, thats when its time to relax and enjoy yourself.

We have just this morning in the rain towed the Volvo back to home. I will start with some diagnostic work tomorrow as it's meant to be drier. The garage doing to MOT work had played with it and said there was no power going to the ignition. I will however start from scratch.

If he could come or just offer advice as we are Worthing based that would be great. My father in-law has had lots of health over the last 3 years and its his "wanting to drive the car again" thats keeping him going .... he loves the car. For me its turn into a Love / Hate thing ha ha

I am more than willing to do the work but its always this time of year they play up -- weather turning etc.

My personal email address is;
** best not put that here **

Thank you for your offers so far even if nothing comes of it we do appreciate it.

My wife and I towed the Volvo home from central Worthing to West Worthing at 7:30 - typical it was raining hard and the volvo steamed up ! - Just so glad I have my Zafira back on the road as its the Diesel so brilliant for towing, that had the pump fail so I had to change it for a working pump.

Thanks again
Paul

I'm on paultill38@gmail if interested (no shame in my name!). Thanks for update - I too am hoping its dry tomorrow to work on a friends 740.

Just a couple of things - that fusebox down the n/s door pillar is prone to corrosion. Not sure which does what (but diagram on back of cover) but remove each fuse and thoroughly clean before refitting using some ACZP anti-corrosion grease stuff (or of course replace fuses). I know blank-all about car electrics but when similar happened to my 240 a local Volvo-owning friend came round and found a relay had failed. It was situated behind the glove-box and he said it was a safety-feature preventing an electric fuel pump for injection cars continuing to pump fuel if involved in an accident and the driver being incapacitated.

Otherwise I can recommend an auto-electrician in Worthing who sorted the headlight relay out (internal corrosion) on my Volvo 164....... Not sure if he does site visits though.

Thank you and yes having had an issue in the past with non starting I have checked the fuse box and its connections. The fuel pump relay was replaced at that time to cure the problem.

I have a 12V supply to the coil but whilst investigating the coil and distributor ares the coil ignition lead has broken - going to a car spares shop today that used to sell the leads as individual. Its that or a full set - which would hurt, shame as the set on the car are less than 4 years old. The garage the car broke down at -- yes MOT passed but just wouldn't start when they tried to drive it off the ramp!

The cap and rotor arm were slightly corroded so had a clean up - again see how the lead "sourcing" goes and maybe replace the set anyway.

I will drop you an email as I may need the gentlemans help in Lancing.

I can also suggest a very good mechanic in Worthing if you get stuck. He's not a Volvo specialist, but has done a lot of work on my past and present ones (70s-00s models)

Sounds like you have a handle on it though.

P.s. there is a thread somewhere on the forum where you can request your post count to be altered to enable PMs to be sent

EDIT: found it

Thanks for the link - I have posted a request as per many other users seem to be doing.

As for the Mechanic - it's always good to have names of trusted mechanics. It seems I can read PM's but cant send any just yet so please feel free to send me the details

Default Success - its alive

Yay

After rather alot of cleaning - wiring loom and engine components followed by some circuit testing I was left with either the Hall effect sensor or ignition module.

The hall sensor seemed to be pulsing a signal so took a punt on the Ign module and £20 later plugged in the new one and after 3 seconds of cranking the engine fired up.

Lovely sound from the 2.3 petrol engine

Thank you - had an email from Graham and it all pointed to Ign Module.

Job done and happy father in-law.

From one Paul to another....excellent, well done. Am supposed to be taking my sons V70 to Graham soon - as the phrase goes "we'll miss him when he's gone" as knowledgible people in Sussex seem hard to locate.
Have yet to use GB Auto's near Sutton, Surrey yet but he had a couple of older Volvo's there when last visiting (for advice at that stage). It seems the quiet ones are the best....
