1998 T5 Auto intermittent no start fault just developed?
My completely dependable (until now) V70 just last night and today has developed a no-start problem. Each time the dash lights up and gauges start to work, the pre-ignition noises start (fuel pump?), but other than a faint click deep in the dashboard there is nothing when I turn the key to try to start the car. There is no starter motor noises at all. On each occasion I have finally got the car started after leaving it for some time. The car has not been in gear and I tried both neutral and park positions.
I wonder what this could be - a temperamental relay? A starter motor on its way out? There have been no warning signs. Has anyone experienced something similar - if so, I would value advice/guidance. Many thanks. |

First thing I suggest is check the battery voltage with a multi meter or put a power pack on it and see if it will start with that.

Faulty neutral/park switch.Wiggle the lever a bit and see if it works.

Many thanks for the replies. It's a fairly new battery (last year), but that will be my first place to start. I have already tried jiggling the part/neutral - had a car with this issue before, so will keep that in mind.
I have a spare starter motor relay that i'll now keep in the car as well. I will report back when I have traced the problem. |

Dear all, it turned out to be a low battery - possibly caused by a door aperture light remaining on after the rear door was closed.
Many thanks for all of the help. |

Door aperture light
[QUOTE=Tweedle12;2480619]Dear all, it turned out to be a low battery - possibly caused by a door aperture light remaining on after the rear door was closed.
Have problems with the front passenger door light on my V70 remaining on and running the battery down if the door is not closed firmly (i.e. slammed shut) so now always check that all the interior lights are off when closing and locking the car. Understand that there is a micro-switch in the door lock mechanism that needs replacing but don't know if they are still available and as I have to work outside and the weather is not ideal, it is a job that is being put off until the summer.
